I stopped by for more pepper plants. On a shelf out of reach were a couple dozen tomato plants wrapped with orange tape and labelled "Not For Sale! Mother bird nesting! Do Not Disturb!" A mother robin chose the greenhouse as her nest site. She's not bothered by the constant flow of people either. I was able to just glimpse the color of her back through the plants. She'd built the nest at base of the plants, right on top of the soil. The clerk told me the staff took up a collection to buy the plants when the nest was discovered. Pretty neat. I'll have to return again and again now, just to keep track. No problem,I can always use more varieties of peppers for stir fry. More colors the better. LOL

Heheheheh.......I wonder how many other shoppers are going to make extra trips to keep tabs on the new babies. It's so wonderful the staff took an interest!

Nice story! Birds choose the most interesting places to nest! I had house wrens take up resident in my mailbox last year! WE were careful( and so was mail carrier) to put all the mail in very front of box as she occupied the back! After all, they don't stay long!

It's not unusual to see birds flying around some of the semi-enclosed, large home and garden centers, but yesterday I saw an interesting clip on the news. A swallow had built her nest inside a Home Depot store, but in order to get in and out to get food and feed the babies, she had figured out how to trigger the electonic beam that opens the doors. Clever birdie.

At another garden center a year or two ago, chickadees were nesting in adorable little birdhouses that were hanging on display and for sale. As interested as I was in buying some plants at the time, I was even more interested in watching mama chickadee coming and going accompanied by the loud chirping of the babies. Now if only there had been a way to buy the birdhouse and transport the whole chickadee family to my backyard.

Yes, I see birds and nests all the time at Lowe's and Wal-Mart. One day, as I was leaving Wal-Mart in Elkins, WV, I heard this loud, continious chirping coming from up above and behind me. So I turned to see what was making all the ruckus and I saw a bird nesting right in the middle of the "A" in "Mart" above the main entrance to the store. It seemed to be saying "Hey everyone look at me! I'm up in the A!" It was really funny. Everyone that came in and out looked up at the noisy bird.

A bird learning to trip the door laser is a very smart bird indeed.

I'm glad the employees at the garden center chipped in to pay for the tomato plants, but disappointed they had to do that. I'd think the manager would just let the robin hang out and suffer the loss (small as it would be).
