Hi, Janet! Just wanted to pop over to say hey. And since we were talking books, I got to wondering what everyone's reading now, pathwise. I've got a book on my dresser that's been sitting on my bookshelf waiting its turn for a long time--Simple Spells for Success--and I just got a book with my review stuff for the romance site by Phyllis Curott, The Love Spell, her January release. (Don't ask me, lol.)

Hi Elizabeth! Most of what I read for my spiritual path ends up being reviewed for the New Age site, actually! Right now, I'm reading: Invisible Acts of Power : Personal Choices That Create Miracles by Caroline Myss I really like Myss's work on archetypes, chakras, and energy management. This particular book, just released this month, is about giving and receiving as acts of grace--and how certain types of "gifts" correlate with each chakra. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book. I'm also 1/3 of the way through Destiny of Souls by Dr. Michael Newton, about case studies from his hypnotherapy/psychology practice of life between lives from clients. His first book, Journey of Souls, and this current one, has really done something for me spiritually... It's really quite amazing. My perspective on death and the afterlife have really shifted...perhaps more emotionally than anything. How do spells figure in your personal path, Elizabeth? I'm intrigued.

Good question. lol I consider myself an eclectic witch at this point, a step away from where I was last year at this time, when I considered myself just an eclectic pagan. I do more candle magick than anything else, though I have been known to break out my stones and oils and do a working that way when the need arises. Mostly the candle spells are for worship and regular protection things I do. This book I'm reading just happened to grab my attention when I was digging through my "pagan" bookcase for something new to read. I'm almost always reading something from there, even if it's a reread of something I already went through, and usually more than one. lol

Fascinating Elizabeth!
I once asked (on another board) the difference between Paganism and Wicca, but no one really gave me an answer. What drew you to Paganism? What/who do you worship? I know very little about the actual religious/ritual/worship stuff. I really only know the parts that tend to cross over into "New Age" (like Kabbalah, divination, elements, etc.).
I come across Wiccan/Pagan books sometimes (mostly sent to me from a publisher by accident), but it's like a foreign language to me. I'd like to know more, though, out of curiousity.
What do spells, oils, candles, and stones do exactly? Are they just physical representations of intention? Is there a belief in one over-reaching Divinity with many "faces", or is their an actual belief in sub-gods? (My ignorance is showing. LOL!)
Don't mean to interrogate you, but it would be neat to learn more if you wouldn't mind my nosy questions. I find spirituality fascinating, and learning about other paths is intriguing to me.

Right now, I am reading Kabbalah Tree: A Journey of Balance and Growth. I had never learned about Kabbalah before and a friend of mine who is a Tarot Master suggested this book. Evidently, it's a good tie-in for anyone who is already familiar with Tarot. I literally just started it, so I have nothing to add...yet. Jill

Im still chopping through 'women who run with wolves' by clarissa pinkerton, stopping now and again to read up bits and pieces in ted andrews animal speak, and my other favorite reference books whose names escape me. =

Janet, since Elizabeth didn't answer - Wicca is one form of paganism, with paganism being a broader term that covers lots of different kinds of non-Christian, earth-centered traditions. There's a pretty good overview of it at Religious Tolerance Org[/ULR] and [URL=http://www.witchvox.com/xpress.html]Witchvox.com maintains an excellent Press Page with general information and FAQs. Beliefs vary. There's really no set-in-stone theology, but it's generally worship of both god/goddess, and various other dieties, a person may have a specific pantheon she works with, like Greek/Roman, Celtic, Egyptian, Norse, etc. It can be very pantheistic and animist too. I tend to be more of that with my concept of god as being earth mother/Gaia/Goddess. Divnity is immanent rather than out there somewhere. What do spells, oils, candles, and stones do exactly? Are they just physical representations of intention? Exactly. They're tools IMHO, they're not totally necessary but they help focus and clarify intent so many people do use them. Also they're fun to use.

Thanks for the information, mtnmermaid. I really appreciate it. It's so fascinating to learn of all the varied spiritual paths out there.

I missed this last time through. Sorry.
Wicca is just one of many forms of paganism. There are lots more, like Asatru, Kemetic, recons of lots of flavors--Greek, Roman, Celtic, etc. Paganism is just kind of the umbrella, like Christianity encompasses many flavors, like Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, etc.
As far as what drew me, well, it's where I seem to fit best. lol I've done plenty of reading, lots of exploring before I finally found 'my spot'.
As for worship, I'm not sure that's a word I'd use to describe my relationship with the deities I work with. And that aspect of it, for me, is still relatively new, as I didn't get 'tapped' (or, more accurately, 'thwapped', lol) until last year. Until then, for me, it was a more general practice. Now it's a regular mini-ritual sort of thing, with offerings and devotions.
[qb]I come across Wiccan/Pagan books sometimes (mostly sent to me from a publisher by accident), but it's like a foreign language to me. I'd like to know more, though, out of curiousity.

[/qb] For me, stones, oils, etc. are tools, just as for a Catholic, a rosary might be considered a tool. By themselves, they may hold energy, but it's not directed until I've sat down and done my thing. As far as the gods aspect of it, that differs from one set of beliefs to another. Personally, I believe in multiple deities. I have friends who believe 'all are one', others who believe in a universal god-energy. It just depends on the branch of paganism and the practitioner. I hope that helps a little.
