Janet, I guess you'd be just asking the pendulum (or your higher self, or whomever you consider the answers are coming from)-- it's not really defined in the book I was reading. And anyway, I like to leave it open. Just like in tarot, 'who are you asking the question from?' (Or if you want to be all Zen about it, 'who is asking the question?' )
It seems like mostly a 'respect' thing, when addressing the pendulum. So you know that you are taking it seriously, and with respect. The questions are explained as: CAN I? Do I have the ability/skill to ask at this time? MAY I? Is this something I should be asking about, is this something I should know about? AM I READY? Have I done all the preparation? Have I sorted out my question enough?
Anyway, that's what I got out of it. Interesting stuff.
I love your pendulum btw. Thanks for sharing a picture. It's beautiful.
Do you use the Rose Quartz pendulum for a specific purpose? Or is it just a stone that your are drawn to? I've noticed there are a lot of different theories about specific materials for different uses/questions (and some say it doesn't matter, as long as you are drawn to it). Just curious.

Ah, OK! Now I understand about the "can I?" and "may I?". I don't ask questions of anyone/anything when I do Tarot. I just believe in synchronicity, and the cards that are supposed to come up will come up. But, there's definitely been a difference since I gained confidence in card readings and trusting synchronicity in this regard.
As far as rose quartz, I'm probably drawn to it because I feel my main path/learning in this life is cultivating compassion and balancing my head with my heart. It's a physical reminder of the heart and heart energy, especially with regards to other people.
Btw, which book did you read/are you referring to?

Hello all, I've just posted a review of Amy Zerner and Monte Farber's new divination tool The Truth Fairy: The Truth Fairy - Enchanted Pendulum & Message Board Kit The Truth Fairy Pendulum Kit is imbued with gentle Fairy wisdom. If you loved fairy tales as a child and now need to know the truth about what is going on in your life and how to best deal with it, this oracle is for you. Any thoughts on the review or pendulums?

I have used a pendulum occasionally since high school. I picked mine at a crystal shop back in NJ where I grew up. I selected the most simple one they had in the case, partly because I felt drawn to it, and partially because I was on a very limited budget.
Holding it, I noticed the crystal had a phantom in it, something I knew was rare and special. My comment of "oh, this has a phantom!... I'll take this one!" made the owner ask if she could take a closer look at it. She took a really close look at it, told me that the phantom had not appeared in the stone until then, and went to ring up my purchase. I knew by her surprised look that if the phantom had appeared earlier, the pendulum would not have carried the low price that it did, and I also knew it really was the one for me.
