Episode 3, the first one I've seen this season (I've watched complete first season though). Writing right off the top of my head (and I don't remember all the names), hit me with comments, we're gonna
discuuuuuuss! <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> It also has elements of a recap for those of you who didn't watch this episode, so you can discuss anyway.
-------------------------------
I think I have a favorite, and it's
Yoanna. Girl just seems to have more common sense than others. And then it's probably
Mercedes for that cute little smile and those cheekbones -- she really seems like a nice friendly girlfriend. And then it's probably
Camille, just for the pure unadulterated self-esteem and trust in herself. I don't seem to be as impressed by
Shanti as Betty Johnson seemed to be -- she reminds me too much of a Picasso picture, asymmetrical, eyes are too close, nose is too long, ears are too big, and her chest actually goes inwards.
I thought
Catie looked just like Britney Spears in her Madonna impersonation, and I love her nose. But I don't think she will stay for long, because if you wanna be a model -- [censored], girl, you gotta get used to people criticizing your looks! (As a matter of fact, even if you
don't want to be a model, as an
adult, you're supposed to be able to handle criticism without breaking into tears.)
I really liked to see
Adrienne again (she was the mystery guest), I've always liked that girl. They must have worked on her speech a little bit, because right now, at least, I don't break into uncontrollable laughter every time I hear her speak.
In any case, the challenges got better this season. In this episode, the girls had to:
- be themselves;
- be someone else.
- be themselves again.
I know, those seem like conflicting ideas, but if you are a model, you really want to be able to smoothly transform yourself into an entirely different person -- body and spirit -- while never losing track of
yourself, this is what I think Tyra was trying to teach them this episode.
The first challenge was to show Tyra your own unique style.
I thought
Mercedes pulled it off best. She put a fresh orchid in her hair, and her face just lit up -- it looked organic. At the same time,
Catie royally ****ed up. The little gay guy by Tyra's side called her a "ho," so she burst into tears. She was wearing black leg-warmers, high heels, a denim miniskirt, and a skimpy yellow camisole, to pull her new short blonde haircut together.
Next, Betty Johnson asked each model-to-be to pick out some clothes out of their collective closet (everybody's clothes combined) and demonstrate them on the runway. Everybody did a "sexpot" walk, just like they saw in Betty's last runway show. The only person who looked
really bad doing that was
Shanti. It was completely unnatural on her. When she pulled her shirt off her shoulders I was repulsed, not aroused -- you could study anatomy there! And Betty was completely illogical in liking her because:
a) she put on an image other than her real self;
b) that image didn't suit her at all.
After that, each girl was assigned a celebrity to impersonate. If you think it was a daunting task, you are right.
First of all, not all girls were happy with the celebrities they were assigned. For example you could see in the attitude of
Petty Girl (the one who b***hed the entire episode about
Camille breaking her earring) -- who was assigned Grace Johnes -- that she was rather repulsed by the icon she was chosen to represent.
Second of all, some of them
obviously looked like some
other celebrity!
Shanti, for example looked nothing like Nicole Kidman, but I'm sure she could pull off Gwyneth Paltrow pretty well, and
Asian Girl looked more like Lucy Liu than Katherine Zeta-Jones.
Short Girl looked nothing like Salma Hayek either. Yo, you gotta have
MAJOR BOOBAGE going on and a set of hips to boot, to look like Salma Hayek --a model can't impersonate Salma Hayek by definition!
I think clear winners in this part were
Yoanna (Audrey Hepburn), and then
Catie (Marilyn Monroe). And I found myself
completely smitten with the way
Camille portrayed Diana Ross.
But what I liked the most was the last competition -- accessoirize your little black dress for an evening on the town. What I liked most about it was that each girl was given exactly the same set of accessories.
And every single girl, excpet
Yoanna (the girl with the common sense), was harshly criticized. While for some girls, the judges had valid points, I totally didn't like the way the
Whiny Gay Guy treated
Camille (and not just because she's one of my favorites). He was all like, "You know, it ain't brain surgery, honey, don't make it out to be like that," when the only thing she did was say how the rings on her necklace matched the ones on her purse. If
that's overanalyzing, he must really not use his brains a whole lot.
WAES (Wrinkly-[censored] Ex Supermodel) was still there! I was delighted about that, because during last season she managed to come up with the most inane comments! This time she did, too. When
Shanti threw a shawl over her hips she said that models only ever do that if their hips are freaking huge -- I mean has she
seen Shanti? I doubt that at her 6' she weighs a full 100 pounds, for crying out loud.
So, anyhow, predictably -- the choice came down to
Short Gil and
Crybaby Catie. Unsurprizingly,
The Short Girl got kicked out. I'm pretty sure
Catie is next though.
