:Was the event we now call Christmas originally a "pagan holiday"? In some ways. Does that mean the church should discard it, along with its lights, tinsel, and increasing commercialism? Only if we are prepared to abandon many other holidays and common Christian practices that the early church co-opted for its own purpose of glorifying Christ.

Christmas has its origins in the fourth century. December 25, which Christians now herald as Jesus' birthday, was actually the date on which the Romans celebrated the birth of the sun god.

That would mean getting rid of Easter (originally a holiday celebrating Eastre the goddess of spring), All Saints day (Nov 1st to counter Halloween) & Candle Mass (ground hog day) amongst others.

The Bible tells us not to take part in thing not of GOD, i pray for the souls of those who do.

As a Christian I can't imagine NOT celebrating the birth of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ if only for the difference He has made in my life. But of course He made a difference for the whole world.
I celebrate Jesus everyday but celebrating His birth with all other Christians is a very special time.

Does it really matter what day it is or was? Celebrating the Lord's birth is a special time. Without that, there would have been no salvation for my soul or yours.

I agree with Lynn, very well said.

Most historians are pretty sure Jesus was born in the spring. I don't really see why it matters which day got chosen though--I doubt he cares as long as we are keeping the purpose of our celebration in mind. It's the purpose, not the date that matters in my mind.

I just read last night that the time could have been winter because the shepherds in the fields close to Bethlehem would have been keeping sheep for sacrifice.
Interesting, but as Terrie said, it isn't the time, but the purpose that is important.

I suggest that everyone read up on the history of the Winter Celebrations. There was a specific reason why "The Church" decided on Dec. 25th as the day for celebrating the birth of Jesus the Christ. The following is from a source that is multi-faith and gives an objective view of the facts surrounding such religious issues.

Quote of my own: Interesting, but as Terrie said, it isn't the time, but the purpose that is important. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
