Tis is kind of off topic, but I need to vent a little. I started a new job about amonth ago...waiting tables which for me has always been easy in the past. I've always liked to ambience in the restaurant setting. I've always gotten along with other people pretty easily and always known what kind fo person or quality, I should say, clashed with my own personality.
For some reason lately, I've been having lots of bad days. I don't seem to mesh well with my co-workers and have ruffled some feathers around there. I keep going back thinking that it's GOT to get better...but everyday there is some sort of clash. I've started looking for a new job and I hope I find one. But does anyone have any advice or insight into why, at 40, I am now having so many problems getting along with people?
I really don't want to go to work right now and tons of excuses keep flowing through my head as to why I shouldn't go and just stay home. I'm going to go because my family expects me to, but I'm not happy and I'm having alittle anxiety about it. Any advice?

Jenna, I wonder if it has anything to do with the stress of living in a new location?

Jenna, I think the older we get, the more we are set in our own ways. I do not think this is a bad thing. Do your coworkers share any common ground with you? Sometimes a workplace has a negative energy because of any sort of thing, such as gossip, drug use, etc. It rubs off on everyone and makes the environment stressed. Maybe another job isn't a bad idea. Good luck! Nicci

It is hard to identify with younger people sometimes. I look at my 19 yr. old daughter like she's nuts until I stop to think how I was then. Nicci

Shalom Nicci My question to you would be *what would YOU like to be doing instead of working in a resturant? Do you have some special skill or talent? Have you secret thoughts of developing a special skill or talent that would set you in the middle of your own parade instead of at the end of or the beginning of someone elses journey?
Dont be afraid to dream; to ahve anplan and to start even in small ways to get where you want to be. I will be praying for you. be fitly blessed, ateedaz

Blondie,
I am 43 and have worked in a restaurant as a dishwasher, janitor, prep cook and busperson all as an adult from my late 30's and up to about two years ago.
Some people I got along with and some were just indifferent toward me. I never got invited out with the others after work, which was a double edged sword as my wife would not have appreciated it and I probably wouldn't have gone anyway but on the other hand, it would have been nice to have been asked anyway.
Unless you are an alcoholic, pot smoking, sex crazed person, it is hard to fit in with the youth today unfortunately. I worked at a restaurant that the movie "Waiting" is loosely based on and honest to God, 95% of the staff were druggies. That movie was so accurate it is scary. The only thing that didn't go on was that whole frontal nudity thing from the movie.
I couldn't take it anymore so I quit and went back to school. I am currently working on my Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and Management.
I understand your frustration as it is easier to go to work and enjoy it if you can get along with everyone or at least most people there.
Waitressing is quick money at the end of the night if you need it, especially if you are living paycheck to paycheck.
My best advice would be to try and find a new job where people are more around your age and you will be happier and your quality of life will be better.
I, too, will pray for you and I hope you make the best choice as well. Good Luck.

I know it is difficult to ignore the negative energy you are surrounded by.
I have to say that you sound very sad. In this case I think you need to figure that out first. You can change jobs but you will still take that sadness with you and the low self esteem. Your first step needs to be you. If your happy with who you are, you can ignore the negativity that surrounds you for the most part and get on with what you need to do.
You need a plan for your life, just like a business needs a plan to succeed, a life needs a plan for happiness. You need to find something to work towards to look forward to.
