From FactCheck.org

Pro-Bush group's first TV ad states the problem correctly. But the AARP uses a misleading photo

Summary

A pro-Bush TV ad gets the central fact right about Social Security: by the time today's young workers retire there are projected to be only two workers paying Social Security taxes for every one person receiving Social Security Benefits. Today there are 3.3 workers per beneficiary.

But a different ad opposed to Bush's efforts uses a misleading photograph. It shows wild trading in commodities like cocoa futures to depict the risk that workers could face with private Social Security accounts. Actually, what's being proposed is not investment commodities, but in far less risky stock and bond mutual funds, which would be broadly diversified.

This whole thing is a smoke screen to cover the most bungled economic policy of American history. If Bush were to put the 7 trillion bucks deficit he has run up (in just 4 years!) into Social Security, he wouldn't have to steal from the poor to give to the rich. To propose *any* investments as part of security for retirement is irresponsible. The stock market crashed when he was first elected and those of us who had invested in it lost a ton of retirement funds then. I lost 30%. Social Security is and should remain that. It shouldn't become "Social Risk".

Caring Parent. I believe that YOU know how to handle your money and assets better than the government does. Some people would like a faceless bureucrat handle their assets and in that case they should be allowed to turn over to the government, everything they own. The Social Security retirement system is nothing but a Ponzi scheme. Maybe you'll get some and maybe you won't: it all depends on what retirement age the bureucrats think is right. If you die before you receive any payments than the rest of the money goes back to Uncle Sugar and you cannot pass it on to your heirs.

I know how to handle my money, but I was required by law to contribute it to Social Security instead. Now I don't get it back. That's the fact.

I have just one thing to say....

Lock Box

Sorry, couldn't resist.

It was just a few years ago that many Dems were calling for a drastic change to protect Social Security. Now, many of these same people are saying there's no problem.
