Don't you just love (ie, despise) how the fashion retailers drag trends in and out of the current definition of hip?

In an article devoted to new trends appearing at the recent Emmy Awards, the Ventura County Star reports:

"As for jewelry, chandelier earrings are out, linear cascading earrings are in, as are brooches -- worn on the dress, in the hair or as a pendant."

They may say that chandeliers and other things are in or out...but I work in retail...True there is a trend towards 'linear' earrings, but we are still getting chandeliers in, and they sell faster than other types.

As for the brooches, I've seent hat as a major trend in wedding attire; in hair and flowers

Flipping through the channels last week)I saw Amber Tamblyn with some kind of advisor or fashion person checking out different things to wear for the emmys (clothes, shoes, accessories).

At a jewelry store, they showed all kinds of chandelier earrings, saying that they are very feminine but should be delicate as they were pairing them with a velvet choker of some kind (very youthful looking). I don't know what she looked like, tho, since I didn't watch the emmys so I'm not sure if she took their advice.

I didn't watch them either, but I am just as surprised at the article I quoted above. Give me a break!

However, I shouldn't have described them as the "fashion retailers" who try to change the trends all the time. What would be correct? The big corporations who make more money if trends change all the time . . .?! I'm not sure!

I agree with you guys in guessing that chandeliers are NOT going to go away over night. There's just no way.

Also, I encourage everyone to wear what you like, when you like - regardless of what a magazine or anyone else says.

Interestingly . . . I've been reading lately that fashion in general is starting to go through a crisis for manufacturers, because people are creating their own "trend" of eclectic looks and fashions that they customize themselves, etc.

I love that idea!

PS Wendy, since youre in fashion retail, your kind of on the cutting edge of trend changes. Please post your observations here in the forum from time to time!

I read the article about the new "eclectic style" too. That's good news for all of us Indie Designers. People will flock to us! LOL

I don't believe that chandeliers are out, but I think they will become more delicate and less blingy... who really knows, though? Time will tell

I agree - I think it's great for indie designers! I hope it helps people to discover new designers and then keep them as a valuable resource even after the current trends pass.

I will be writing an article this year on some of the advantages of buying from a designer/artisan - hope that helps, too!

So far, I'm just not seeing a real slow-down in advertising for chandeliers. Maybe I'm not seeing as many being worn - but I do live in Seattle and things are a little lower-key here than in other place, like L.A. for example, where I suspect they're still going strong.

Thank you for posting, Georgia!

Ha ha I feel so loved!

So I'm seeing fewer chandelier earrings, or they are a smaller version. Cut bezel set 'stones' as opposed to wired beads. Smaller than a half dollar and not quite so chunky or 'noisy' I suppose the word is - as in they are more like art versus windchimes.

More and more linear earring styles are coming in. Drop styles and long dangling pieces. Seems a favorite is what weve been calling the 'rams horn' - its a hoop design that forms a flat sort of spiral and it looks just like a rams horn - Ill have to find a pic I'm feeling that I havent described it very well. Try this :

Also, the style of jewelry seems to be headed towards art deco classical styles. Hinting to the 40's and 50's. I just landed a pair of large silver drops with bezeled cz's I love them and they look antiqued, O how I love to batt my eyes and say they were my nanas.

Personally my wardrobe is consumed of 'safe' pieces with funky accessories. It's the curse of limited budget and the ease of matching everything to black pants.

Safe weekend all =]

I think what's in and what's out also depends on what area you are in. Some of middle America is just getting chandelier earrings, while the more cosmopolitan urban areas such as LA or NYC had them and are moving on to the next trend.
With the newer "Bollywood" type movies being hyped, I think the chandelier earrings will be with us for a while - possibly in a more exotic Indian/Middle Eastern style.

Audrey,

Excellent observation! You're right about the Bollywood trend, which is expected to be big this spring and summer.

We should see more gold colored jewelry to go with the wonderful India-inspired colors. So perhaps we'll see more gold chandeliers.

Wendy -

I didn't even notice your repeat in the thread! I doubt anyone did - don't worry, you don't look like a dork!
