Meditation, like all else, is a personal thing. But I can tell you what I do in meditation. First of all, a quiet place, with a relaxing atmosphere, is essential. Music helps me, soft and rhythmic, something slow, to help regulate your heartbeat. Next, I pick a candle with a color and scent to match the intent of my meditation. I stare into the candle, focusing on the flame. Most people say to "clear your mind", but I feel that clearing your mind requires work :-). I let my mind wander as it may, and I find that very relaxing. It also often leads to insights, like a quiet brainstorming session. I guess it really comes down to your intent in your meditation.
