A workman who went to lunch forgot and left the soap mixing machine running too long was responsible for making Ivory Soap.

Cathy you're headed in the right direction. Actually a person invented the soap and when they began making it in the factory for mass production, the gentleman you are talking about did in fact forget to turn off the machine when he went to lunch. The machine put so much air into the soap that it made the soap float. People began asking for the soap that floats, which is what Ivory soap is known for.

He is not the inventor though.

William Hesketh Lever is credited with being the first person to imprint a brand name on a bar of soap and wrap it before sale, in 1885, with the now famous Sunlight soap.

They promised to provide the Crown with 5,000 tons of soap annually - thus, they received a monopoly in exchange.

I may have gotten my dates mixed up.....1631 was the incorporation date for the Soapmakers of Westminster and 1632 was when Charles I granted the monolopy and patent by letters. Maybe...

Carl Wilhelm Scheele,
Swedish chemist, accidentally simulated the reaction that occurs in the present-day boiling process of soapmaking, when he boiled olive oil with lead oxide, producing a sweet-tasting substance - He called it lsss (glycerin).

TaDa! Kitty wins! Yea! applause all around for Miss Kitty

I have a nice set of herbal bath bars in my favorite fragrance, Warm Vanilla Sugar, sitting right here with your name on them.

These are actually a new recipe I tried. They are exfoliating bars. They don't get very lathery but they leave your skin feeling refreshed and invigorated and looking great. Of course you'll smell good too.

No need to email me your addy, I've still got it.
