I've had so many experiences with hermit crabs... Well, I've had them all. Everything from finding them on the beach to taking care of blind and molting hermit crabs.
You need to be really dedicated to having them as pets. They take much to care for then people know.
I had to write an short auto. on this in the beggining of 9th grade, so here is how I found them:
It was another trip to Florida and we were in a rental car, currently on our way to the Florida Keys. Surrounding us was nothing but blue, sparkling ocean. We were crossing a long bridge connecting two of the islands together. I looked out the window where the sun was blinding me from and waited for us to arrive.
Finally coming to the island, we stayed at a hotel for the night. We had the chance to see some really neat sites, including the most southern point of Florida. Cuba was only ninety miles away.
When our two day trip to the Keys was over we headed back to the main landmass of Florida, first stopping at one of the Keys only beaches. A large area of sand and very shallow water extended out for about a football fields length. There were no waves as you see on the beaches of Hawaii, only ripples.
We walked out into it, the white sand and clear water showing us many little creatures and shells. My dad reached into the water to see what all of the little blurred dots were on the sand. When he showed them to me, I was surprised to see baby hermit crabs. They were scrambling around everywhere on the ocean floor.
From there, I became fascinated by them. When we came home from Florida I immediately went to the pet store and bought two. My collection grew until I had had a total of 11.
