I have an article about the Santa issue on the LDS Families topic. How do you handle the day your child asks if Santa is real?

i suspect it is quite difficult to deal with, if you cant or dont want to skirt round the question. In my opinion the best idea is to let them down slowly when you feel they will soon find out anyway through friends or just work it out. If you tell them straight off or they find out themselves it could devistate them- especially if they feel you have been lying to them. A good way would just be to stop mentioning things like "what do you think santa will bring you?" and turn it into "what would you like for christmas?" Over a period of months or even years it will dawn on them that he dosnt exist so slowly they dont even realise they found out rather than beleiving in him 99.5% one minute then five minutes later you tell him or her that for the last seven years (or whatever) youve been blagging. My mate still beleived in him when he was 11!

Terrie!

I loved that article!!! AWESOME!

I loved your invisible friends' names too!

My oldest dd doesnt believe in Santa the red-coated gentleman anymore.

I have to constantly remind her not to tell though!!!

Loved Loved Loved the article. Do you know of any websites with historical info on the first santa? (NEVERMIND! saw the related link!!!)

We do not have parties at church, so we do not have to worry about that part

I don't exactly know how it came about - but my 10-year-old believes in Santa but he knows the gentleman in the red coat is a legend/fairytale.

About age 7 we started choosing an "angel" to shop for and really getting involved in homeless missions, etc., during the rest of the year. As my son began to see how we helped out others "secretly", I guess he figured out the "truth". All with a little help from the more cynical of his school chums.

However, we still get him the letter from Santa complete with NORTH POLE postmark and this year he got a phone call from Santa! The Caller ID said, "SANTA'S CALLING" and after he spoke to Santa for a sec, Santa played a recorded message from Mrs. Santa - Twas the Night Before Christmas. Though he knows we do things - he loves the mystery, suspense and surprise. And, like us, I think he really enjoys the fantasy!!

Most of all though - this year - he got to see the children's faces at the Ronald McDonald House when he helped distribute their presents under the tree = THAT was enough to convince him that this Santa "stuff" is pretty darn important!

Thank you, Lawanda. It was fun to write the article, and start thinking about those invisible friends again. The elephant lived in the freezer and slept on the chicken. When he wanted to warm up, he rode around on my son's toe, so naturally I couldn't expect my son to wear shoes! I was heartbroken every time a child outgrew the game.

Kitty, I think that some children do want to believe no matter what they know. I feel like I made it nearly impossible for my children to believe but they did...of course, what would you expect from children who keep elephants in the freezer?

And Lawanda...Mormons think changing a light bulb is a good reason to have a party The old joke goes: How many Mormons does it take to change a light bulb? Six. One to say opening prayer, one to hold the chair, one to change the bulb, one to say closing prayer....and one to bring refreshments. The other one is in charge of the meeting to plan the changing of the bulb.

LOL!!

That is so cute about the elephant on the toe!! hehehehe

My kids don't have imaginary friends, but they love to read books about imaginary things, and then they "play" the book

It is PURE entertainment!!!
