Does anyone have any info on the pros & cons between Viking & Bernina? Specifically, I'm looking at a Viking Iris ($799) and a Bernina 135s ($899). The Viking is a combo sewing/embroidery machine, where the Bernina is sewing only.

I should probably mention that I'm somewhat of beginner. I've dabbled over the years making little things like square pillows, aprons, and other super easy stuff (that usually doesn't turn out right. :-) I really want to sew, but I think I need to replace my 13+ year old Brother that cost about $100 when I bought it. I know that won't solve all my problems, but I think it might help. (I hope.)

What I would like to do is learn to quilt, make some home decorating stuff, and, a long time from now, make some clothes.

Now back to the two machines. I've looked at and had a demonstration for both (thought I have not yet taken them for a test drive). I know personal comfort is key in the decision, but I wanted to know if there's really anything that makes one of these machines 'shine' above the other. Is one more of a quality machine? Does one actually sew better? Are these good prices?

Lots of features were shared with me but I'm still struggling.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. This isn't an easy decision.

Dear Debbie,

I have just recently put an article on the BellaOnline Sewing site you should read. I have no comparative information on the Viking and Bernina machines. However, the article may help you do a little more research before you make your decision.

Be SURE and "test drive" these machines you are considering. You should have a list of features that you are interested in and the shop should be able to answer all your questions.

I always like a machine that does both Embroidery and plain sewing - HOWEVER - if the machine does zig zag, and straight stitching, it is a machine that does embroidery as well. (I am writing an embroidery article on this and it will be up in the next week)

Both are very good brands, and I think it really does depend on how the machine "feels" when you use it. (much like a keyboard, really)

A good sewing centre will let you try both machines first - and if they don't, then go elsewhere to buy.

Personally - my own preference goes to my beloved Elna - it's from the sixties (and is, actually, the same age I am!) and is all metal (weighs a ton) and the fancy stitches work from cams but my mum had one that was 40 feet under water for 10 days, and all it needed was a service and 20 years later is still going strong - and that is what influenced me to buy mine 10 years ago.

Trust me - once you get a machine you love, it will be with you forever. All the more reason to test it before you buy.
