bellaonline has come up with a great idea for a bookclub, and i would like to hear your thoughts on the idea.

would you participate in a bookclub?

what kind of books would you like to see on the list?

books featuring disabilities or all topics?

how long should we devote to each book? (remember we all read at different paces and by different means)
what are your book suggestions?

Thanks

Hello!
I for one would love an exclusive book group focusing on people that have disabilities. I have an entire library and I would be glad to share titles. I also have my own book, STOLEN SHADOWS, that portrays characters with physical impairments. It's part of a trilogy, and SPIRAL PASSAGE will be available soon, with LEVEL GROUND following in the spring of 2003. I'm a disability advocate and I use my writing to educate people not familiar with disability issues. Thanks!!

As a college student from UC Berkeley, there are a few books that I have read from taking disability studies class. The class was very insightful and informative. Growing up with a disability, I had a lot of self-esteem issues. I was the kind person that I wanted to get along with everybody, and wanted to accept everybody because I want the same acceptance in return. I debated for a long time what is my self-worth in this world because majority people around my age can do things for themselves without any personal assistance. This added a lot of pressure feeling inadequate as a person. Anyway, the book No Pity : People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement by JOSEPH P. SHAPIRO gave me more self-confidence, and I feel more empowered after reading and taking the class. Another great book is Staring Back: The Disability Experience from the Inside Out by Kenny Fries.

How about "A Whole New Life" by Reynolds
Price and "Survival Stories: Memoirs of Crises" edited by Katherine Rhett.
Both boks tell of struggle and emergence. They are insprational but not overly so.

A writer is congenitally unable to tell the truth and that is why we call what he writes fiction.
