There's a great book called "Homespun Handknit" that has really good patterns for hats, mittens and gloves, and socks/stockings. I've not knit the christmas stocking pattern, but I remember it being really pretty. And the nice thing about buying this book is that there are lots of other great patterns in there--not just for Christmas. I've knit probably 6 patterns out of there, which is pretty good for a small book.
