I just finished making an afghan using the feather and fan pattern. This pattern calls for three knit rows at the beginning.....and then the pattern rows.....and three knit rows at the end. When I finished the afghan and knitted my three rows and cast off to end the afghan.......that end is nice and flat. However, the beginning of the afghan....it curls a bit. This is the beginning, where I would have cast on my stitches and started with my three knit rows. Any ideas why the beginning end curls.........and the finishing end stays flat.

You may have cast on a little tight, tension takes a lot of practice to master. It may very well work it self flat after a washing.

Thank you. You are probably correct. This afghan was made with a finer baby yarn. Others I have made did not curl......perhaps it is a result of casting on a little too snug! I am going to start another one soon, and will cast on a bit looser.
By the way, I posted last week regarding making socks. Well, that information came in very handy! I have my first sock started.....and it looks good....so far. Hopefully it will turn out ok. If I run into problems, I will post my concern there. Thanks for all your great help!!

You are welcome, glad to be of help. Don't worry about the cast on, when I first started to knit I would do my cast on too tight and my cast off too tight making my finished project look really weird, of course the middle would look just perfect. It just takes practice.

I also cast on a bit tighter than I should (which can make garments hard to get on and off). I've been casting on using a needle a size or two bigger than the pattern calls for, and then my cast-ons are plenty loose. I do the same for cast-offs, by the way, which I also have a tendancy to do too tight.

Hi Becky, Great advice and that certainly would fix the problem every time. Thank you so much.
