I've looked at all my references plus the Internet and nowhere do they illustrate what the increase looks like in a pattern. They only show how to make the increase.
I gather from what you wrote that increases are not done for every stitch in the row, under normal circumstances.
The increases are only placed at those points where you want to shape the piece. In that correct, Eva?

For example if you were making say a sweater and for the one piece you only needed to make increases every knit row that slant to the right, then you would follow the lesson for the slant to the right increase. Now say you were making a project and you had to make your increases each an every row on both sides, then you would follow the lessons for knit and purl both right and left increases. You just have to make sure to pay attention to WHERE you insert your needle (from front to back or back to front) don't worry you will get it, honest. [/qb]
