I am working on lessons to show how to increase/decrease on the knit and purl right & left sides. Once we get these practiced we will be able to actually make a sweater.

I read the lessons 5 & 6. It's not clear how to apply the increases. Could you furnish a simple pattern for each type of increase?

Maybe I'm reading the lessons incorrectly. Should I make some rows of knit stitch and do the increases then repeat for a few rows of purl stitch?

Yes, that is exactly what you should do, that way you will see how they come out.

I don't understand. I keep getting mixed up about keeping the yarn to front or back, depending on how the increase is made.

The other problem is to determine how many stitches to increase or do I increase the whole row? When I go to the next row it really gets messy.

It all depends on what side you want your increase. For example if you were making say a sweater and for the one piece you only needed to make increases every knit row that slant to the right, then you would follow the lesson for the slant to the right increase. Now say you were making a project and you had to make your increases each an every row on both sides, then you would follow the lessons for knit and purl both right and left increases. You just have to make sure to pay attention to WHERE you insert your needle (from front to back or back to front) don't worry you will get it, honest.

I've looked at all my references plus the Internet and nowhere do they illustrate what the increase looks like in a pattern. They only show how to make the increase.

I gather from what you wrote that increases are not done for every stitch in the row, under normal circumstances.

The increases are only placed at those points where you want to shape the piece. In that correct, Eva?
