Think about the word mother: does it make you burst into a fantastic smile as you think of the woman you will love with a passion for all eternity, she who guides your destiny towards freedom, liberty and perhaps tranquility?
If your answer is yes, you will have embraced your mum and the 10 English words that came top in a survey of favourites conducted by the British Council.

You may, on the other hand, reply: "Oi! I am flabbergasted that such a loquacious, hilarious and far from gorgeous explosion of nouns and adjectives should have been plucked from serendipity under the umbrella of so cosmopolitan and sophisticated an organisation." In which case, you will have clocked up 10 more words from the list of 70 gathered to mark the council's 70th birthday. You can use up eight more by pulling on your flip-flop, reaching for your coconut and riding with a giggle over the rainbow on your cute kangaroo to your hen night before you turn into a pumpkin.

The wordlist, which contains only one verb (cherish) which is not also a noun, emerged after the council asked more than 7,000 learners in 46 countries what they considered the most beautiful words in English language. Some 35,000 other people registered their favourites in an online poll run in the non-English speaking countries where the council operates.

"It's interesting that mother, the only word of the 70 that describes a direct relationship between people, came top of the poll," said Greg Selby, the council's communications and marketing officer, who managed the project.

I used to keep a list of beautiful words in my journal when I was a child. Serendipity was always my favorite. In our family, if we got lost on a family outing, we declared it a serendipity outing and looked for something fun to do--whatever we happened to discover. We found the most amazing things that way, but we also learned to take a challenge a make it into something special. Maybe that's why I liked the word.

For my 4.5 years old daughter "mommy" is really the word and the world! But there are thousands of other words which would be probably more important for her later in life

Mother or mommy will be always one of the most important words out of respect for the person who
gave birth to you and guided you in your early life.
So in that perspective "mommy" will stay an important
word in her life, but later she will more likely use words
like mom or mother. In South-Africa it was funny to
hear a 33 years old mother of two kids (my sister)
and a 34 year old guy (myself) saying "Mamma"
duch for "Mommy" or Mother to our mother.
Because we see eachother so rarely we do not use that
word much. You don't use it in phonecalls with your mother. Now I think of it I use the word Dad less than mother. In families the mother is the central person.

As a kid it was funny to hear my mother speak Polish to her mother in Poz�an on the phone, and using the word Mammo. Because the connection was very bad she spoke very loudly. Mammo, Mammo, Mammo, .....
are you there (in Polish ofcourse).
I first heard Polish due to my mothers phone calls with
Poland and America.

You are going to think I'm an awful person. Try not to when I say this........

The word "Mother" always makes my hair stand on end. My mother is not a nice person. She was never kind to any of her children and was as about as hateful as a person could be. I witnessed her hurting a lot of people.

Now she is very old and has outlived all of her "nice" contemporaries. She needs a lot of help. I give her that help because it is my duty, but I feel physically ill when I have to be around her.

I am a mother of two young men. I have tried my best to be a good mother to them. Not repeat history. I HATE Mother's Day though. I look at the greeting cards and always leave without one. My sister says she has cried while looking at them.
