Israeli minister says Gaza plan to go ahead

Warsaw, Poland, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Wednesday Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is determined to pull out of Gaza.

Speaking at a meeting with Polish counterpart Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz in Warsaw, Shalom was reported by Polish television as calling on Israel's coalition government to unite around Sharon to overcome opposition to the plan, which has split his own party, Likud.

Shalom also said Poland, as the largest of the new members of the European Union, could be an important mediator in the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians and was regarded by Israeli as a good, potential honest broker.

Some 3 million Polish Jews died at the hands of the Nazis in World War II. During his two day visit, Shalom visited several sites of historic importance to Jews in Poland including the town of Lublin from where some of his relatives originated.
