Song about Zhankoye, Jewish communal railroad station in Crimea in Soviet Union/now Russia:Carl

ZHANKOYE

Watch the video:

Sing along:
http://www.rebeccawave.com/printab05/engzhank.htm
(trans: T. Bikel)
On the road to Sevastopol,
Not too far from Simferopol,
There's a railroad station.
Why go looking high and low?
There's no finer station, no!
Than Zhankoye, zhan, zhan, zhan.
Refrain:
Hey zhan, hey Zhankoye,
Hey Zhanvili, hey Zhankoye,
Hey Zhankoye, zhan, zhan, zhan.
Tell me brothers, if you can,
Where's Abrasha? Where's that man?
His tractor's racing like a fan.
Aunt Leye is at the reaper,
And Beyle is at the thresher,
In Zhankoye, zhan, zhan, zhan.
(refrain)
Who says Jews can only trade,
Eat fat soups and not create,
Nor be sturdy workingmen?
Enemies can talk like that!
Jews! Let's spit right in their eye!
Just you look at zhan, zhan, zhan.
(refrain)

Guess what, I've been there! Going by train from Sevastopol to Simpheropol (BTW, it's actually in the Ukraine, not Russia), I did pass through a small railway station at Dzhankoye. Well, there's really nothing to see there.

Anyway, try to get the CD called "Shvaygn = Toyt" by the Klezmatics to hear a really good version of this song!

Some very low humor from America, a play on Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond:

Kai, thanks for the good humor. Where do Barbara Streisand & Neil Diamond fit in? Carl

Karol, Ill look into the CD. Thanks. Did The Nazis kill all the Jews in Zhankoy in WW2? Why is Zhankoy not vibrant today?
Read about Ukrainians & Crimean Tatars:

They sang the original, as I am sure you know - you follow music more closely than I do. As for fitting into the Polish forum, it is a wide step to the Crimea and a song, and just another small step to another song. If there is any direct connection, it could be that either or both of the original singers are Jewish. I don't follow most people's religion.

Prime reason was recent arrival of the song on my computer and the song theme of the thread you introduced.

Kai, I'm sure you'r aware that Jews & Tartars have lived in Poland for centuries.
I don't follow Streisand & Diamond closely.
Balkan music is my favorite. Great stuff!:
