Hi Jaga,
I have never had herring and potatoes for Ash Wednesday. We always had some kind of fish usually baked. Yesterday I made Orange Ruffy baked in garlic sauce with bread crumbs on top, I served it with new potatoes in butter, onion & dill, I also had fresh string beans.
We eat herring but usually as an appetizer.

Babcia,
how interesting it is to know! I thought that everybody has herrings. Somebody asked me before - what is it that all Poles like herring so much? <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I am glad I did not need to prepare it like my mother since we can buy it so easily in groceries!

Nothing too special. Grilled sea bass and green beans at a restaurant. Herring sounds good. It's one of my favorite foods but is somewhat difficult to find around here.

You can buy everything at Zabar's in NYC. And if they don't have it on hand they will order it and delivery it to your house (if you live in the area).

Jaga: Fran & I enjoy fish. Minimum fat & good amino acid pattern. Recall that Jesus was a fisherman & probably ate a lot of fish. Since Mideasteners are highly genetically susceptible to diabetes (mostly Type 2--not insulin dependent), Jesus probably saw that his compatriots felt well after eating fish compared to lamb or beef.
