I saw a girl that had half her hair crimped and thought it was so sute. The crimps seemed to be a lot bigger than I have ever seen. What is a good size crimper to use on long hair? Should all of the hair be done or just parts of it?

ah, crimping.... that was very popular back in the 80s when I was in high school. Here's a few things I learned from doing that to my own and my friends hair.

They make crimpers with different size waves on the iron ends, and a few fancy ones have interchangable plates. What size crimp you put in your hair is up to you. How much of your hair is also up to you.

If you crimp the underlayers, you can get a lot of volume without all the hair appearing wavy. If you crimp the outer layers, you can get waves without a gigantic volume of hair. If you crimp all of it, work from under to upper layers and be ready to have a head the size of a dandelion when you get done....LOL...

There was one girl in college who had very long (down to her butt) hair and it was heavy. It wouldn't hold a crimp. She washed it weekly. After one such wash, three of us (counting her) spent 5 hours braiding her entire head into 1/2" wide braids. She wore those for a week and then took them out. Her hair had expanded to Diana Ross wig size, but it held the wave/crimp effect for a week, slowly going down a bit each day.

<img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Thank you Rae. You took care of that question very nicely! I can't think of a thing to add.

Except one thing:
If your hair doesn't hold the crimp, there are glazes and foams that are not heavy or sticky but make your hair respond to the iron and hold the crimp, curl or wave very well.

Lynne - Before I got into working with my natural curls, I was a big crimping fan. I passed my crimping iron a few years back to a friend with long, medium-weight, straight hair who wanted to play with it.

Celeste - In my movie collection at home, is the movie "eXistenZ" with Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh in it. They did a nice partially crimped hairdo on her in that one.
