Hi, I'm new here. I have waist-length hair. I haven't colored it in at least a year but about 3/4 of it still has a goldy color. The top 1/4 is over 50% grey. Is there a way to blend this all together? I'm looking to eventually let the natural color grow out.

Are you planning to keep your hair at waist length? The best way to blend it is probably to streak some of the gold color in to the gray area. That will break up the line and make it easier to grow out.
If you can trim some off the length, it will be easier.

Trim some off?! eek I know, that's the best way, but it's taken me years to get it this long and I don't want to lose any!

So do you think it's possible to blend? Should I use a permanent or semi-permanent type?

And thanks!!

I understand. It's hard to cut hair when you have worked hard to get it.
If you are just going to streak the gray with color, use permanent color. That way it will stay in a long time and not fade too much.
It is possible to use semi-permanent and cover all of it and let it fade, but sometimes it does not fade away and you are starting all over again.

Sometimes it is better to cut off some of the hair. When is the last time you had a trim? Split ends can be a real "ick."

If you are old enough to be getting that much grey, I think it could be time for a new uplifting style and a nice soft color... My mom had really long grey hair for a while, and it just "weighed her down." She ended up getting her hair cut to about shoulder length and blending everything in. It looks beautiful now.

Lots of times when older women have really long hair, they think it looks sexy, well - sometimes it can do the opposite... Don't take this the wrong way... just maybe its time for a change?

Hmmmm...Well, I'm 40 but most people tell me I look younger. My fiance loves my hair long  and I prefer it that way too. I trim the bottom myself about every couple months. The main reason I stopped going to my hairdresser is just cuz I couldn't afford it. She does a great job and knows what I mean by "trim off a LITTLE".

I may try streaking. Should I start with a semi-permanent to see if I like it, or start right away with a permanent?

If you mean 'streaking' as in blond or a lighter color than you now have, you will have to use permanent hair color. Semi permanent color only deposits color it does not lighten.

Ah, I see. I'll have to give it more thought, I don't want to do anything with permanent color that I'll regret later!

Thanks a bunch, this thread has been really helpful for me.
