What are your opinions of veggie burgers out on the market today? Do you like store-bought, made from scratch, from a particular restaurant?

I would have to say The Hobbit Cafe in Houston makes the best veggie burger, made from scratch. They have a black bean version and a soy version. Each of them is about as big as your head and soooo good. (The whole menu in general is excellent for vegetarians and/or the health conscious.)

Also, the Gardenburger at Fuddrucker's has got to be at the top of my list. I don't know if they grill the patty on a separate grill, but I don't care. Those Fuddrucker's buns are to die for, and the fact that the patty is Gardenburger-brand makes it even better.

I used to think Boca was the best, but now I think it is trying too hard to be meat. I really like veggie burgers with more of a grainy quality.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I have had Burger King's veggie burger. It's not my favorite, but it's great in a pinch, like on a road trip through one-horse towns.

It would be great if other restaurant chains followed suit. I think the McDonald's in NYC's East Village offers a veggie burger, but it's obviously not a nationwide menu item. It's not so much that I actually want to eat at McDonald's, but sometimes it's really hard to survive on gas-station food on long road trips.

Okay, I'm rambling.

We don't have the Veggie at Burger King here -- yet.

I do like the BackYard Burger version of the veggie burger...I too enjoy the grainy quality and the symphony of flavors in each bite. Plus, no tummy troubles after I eat it (as I have with a regular burger).

I am biased to the Gardenburger store brand and the Morningstar brands as my hubby works for the parent company and we get great deals!!!

Wow, I am surprised that you don't have the BK Veggie where you are. Burger King and PETA made a big deal about it being part of their national menu, so I just assumed it would be everywhere.

Wow, that's really cool that you get discounts on the Morningstar branded foods. My sister worked for General Mills at one time, but I don't remember her mentioning any freebies!

Chili's has a very good black bean burger patty. As for the frozen ones, I prefer Gardenburgers, but usually buy the Bocas. One son is vegan and that limits the choice to the Boca Vegan Original. My ~real~ favorite is the Morningstar Chik'n patty, though.

Do you know about how much protein a veggie burger contains. I just had one from red robin today and it was o.k. The best one I've had was at Hard Rock Cafe in Houston a few years ago. I used to eat them all the time but I'm a big beef eater now so I haven't had one in a while. I'm kind of on a high protein moderate carb diet so I wonder about the protein:carb ratios of most foods. If you have any idea let me know.

You can usually tell how much protein is in a veggie burger by its texture. Veggie patties that more closely simulate meat usually have a higher protein content than bean- or grain-based burgers.

Here are a couple of national brand frozen burgers to give you a frame of reference.

Calories - Carbs - Protein - Fat

Gardenburger Original
110 - 16g - 6g - 3g

Amy's Kitchen All-American
120 - 15g - 10g - 3g

Morningstar Farms Spicy Black Bean
150 - 16g - 11g - 4.5g

Boca Vegan Original
90 - 6g - 13g - 1g

Morningstar Farms Harvest Burger
140 - 8g - 18g - 4g

Adding a slice of canadian bacon probably defeats the purpose of a veggie burger, but could up the protein content.

Hello All!

It's funny this would be the first message I post a reply to because I have to confess, I'm not a vegetarian. However, the first article I added to my new Sandwiches site at BellaOnline is "Meatless Burgers Sizzle at Summer Picnics!" And, I know it's not exactly summertime if you're in the U.S., but it was an article I had written sometime ago that I'd almost completely forgotten about. I hope you'll stop by and say, "Hello!"

http://bellaonline.com/articles/art6495.asp

Since I'm still getting my feet wet at Bella, any suggestions for developing the site would be welcome. I am also available for cross-promoting with other food and wine sites as long as there is even the slightest possibility I can relate the information to Sandwiches. I have already set up a category for "Vegetarian's Delight" and I'm in the process of developing a text format for newsletters. If you have a food (recipe) newsletter, I'd love to see a copy of it.

Thanks,
~Lisa

My Favorite veggie burger is the Morningstar Pizza Burger. Even my hubbie, a die-hard flesh eater, loves this burger. It has mozarella and basil. Unfortunately I have given this pleasure up as I am becoming a vegan. The BK Veggie is pretty yucky to my taste buds and I have concerns about where it has been on the grill. I have to say as far as restaurant burgers go, I have had some pretty yummy portobella burgers at various places. My hope for the future is a great tasting vegan cheeseburger! Does anyone know of any?

I love subways new veggie burger. It's so hard to find a good vegie burger. I can't stand Boca Burgers. Does anyone have any suggestions for frozen or pre-made grocery store vegie burgers that aren't Boca? I like garden type vegie burgers rather than soy burgers.
