No, I'm not talking about chubby birds!

For those unfamiliar with the term, this is a project that passes from person to person with each person completing a different phase. In quilting, this usually means that a central block is passed and each person adds a border using the fabric that is included with the block.

I have never participated in a RR, but was wondering if any of you had. If so, can you share your experiences?

RE: Round Robin Quilts!
I've "played" at this a couple times in my local Guild, and in a smaller group of friends. Choose your "block-mates" carefully. A number of us participated in a Baby Jane block swap. One of the group always waited until the last minute, and then tried to make up her own "shortcuts" in construction of the blocks. Unfortunately, these seldom worked, and I have about 20 blocks that I feel must be made over because of poor technique. Several of us face the same problem. She's got a heart of gold, but she just slaps her stuff together. I thought it was just me because I tend to be a perfectionist, but others have mentioned doing things over as well.

I've participated in a couple other groups where it was nearly impossible to tell the work of one from another. Just be sure to know the skill level of those you invite to participate. All that said, I'd do it again! It's fun to get together and swap the blocks.

Thanks for sharing your story. I have also heard some horror stories about poorly constructed blocks. Alas, I am one of those that always waits until the last minute so I generally avoid doing block swaps. eek Now fabric is a whole different story!

I was a member of a "round robin" made up of rows. We all made a first row. Mine was vines with appliqued leaves and hearts, in patriotic colors. We were asked to add a row, 45" wide and then send it on to the next person. There were I believe eight people all together. Well I got three people's rows. Did my part. Then sent them on. One lady to this day, a year and a half later has still not sent the rows on or even acknowledged a lot of emails and even phone calls. She promised to send them on, or back but hasn't. Just a word of warning, do the robin with quilters you know. It's safer and much more fun that way!
Otherwise, I have friends that have done them and they are absolutely beautiful when they get them back. Some were rows and some were actual tops they got back after making a center. Workmanship was wonderful....
Always a pro and con isn't there? smile
Happy quilting!
