Hi all!
I sure love orchids - I'm here in Amsterdam now but in America I bought one in the grocery store and it did well.
This summer we're going to redo part of the kitchen and I want to place an orchid on top of the frig - below a skylight.
Do you think that would be a good location?

Thanks for visiting the forum, Susan <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
As far as putting an orchid on the refrigerator--I've never heard of anyone doing that, but it might work with enough light from the skylight. The only thing I wonder about is the heat from the frig--you'd have to find a plant that doesn't need a cool period since the heat would be pretty much constant.
Let us know what you decide.

Thanks for your advice, Karen - I will let you know later. Actually, that end of the kitchen is right next to the outdoor workshop and is cool. We're north of the 50th latitude here. Sort of like Vancouver, Canada.

Hi I buy orchids from Carter and Holmes in South Carolina. Go to their web site and request a catalog and they will be happy to send you one. Have visited their greenhouses and they are first rate growers. Their prices are good and plants are of great quality. I have also found some good buys at the local Lowe's stores. helens

Hi Karen, if you're a beginner hobbyist, I believe the best place is to buy a flowering orchid from one of the big chain stores. You can get a decent plant at a very reasonable price. Experiment with growing it.
If you're a more experienced grower, or get bitten by the orchid bug, becoming a memeber of a local orchid society will put you in touch with ocal nurseries. They will be able to guide you on those plants that will grow well in your area and what you need to make them happy. Good luck!!

As of now, I buy many of my orchids from the 50% off rack from HD. They are challenging, and usually need alot of care, but it is one of the only placed locally with orchids. I order online too if the price is right or I want something a little different.
Happy Growing!

I have to place my vote for Carter and Holmes as well. I have bought from them 2 times already and loved the plants. There Greenhouses are great. Some things are a little pricey I think, but they are of good quality. The saying is true you pay for waht you get and if you look at it that way then the prices are fine. I'm a cheapskate. LOL Although I bought $75 dollars worth of plants last time I went and I am going back in June. Another place that I have bought good plants from was Live Oak orchids in Sav. Ga They don't have a website. You can find their number online though. I bought my Gongora Tricolor from them and a Cattleya. They were good sized plants for around 35 a piece and both came in spike. I also recomend joining an OS because I have gotten alot of NICE plants for the price of a $2 dollar raffle ticket.
