I have a poinsetta from last year and i want to know how come the leaves aren't turing red? how am i supposed to make it do that?

Unfortunately, poinsettas need a certain amount of dormant time in order to turn red the following year. I have tried to carry over plants also with no luck. My local nursery told me to put the plant in complete darkness for 12 hours a day for up to 6 months.
