don't forget the psychological factor.
there's a lot to be said about going into a situation expecting to feel big, mad pain or going in with no fear built up.

add this to which body part you are getting tat'd up. ankle tats are excruciating... well, to me at least, because there's very little flesh to act as cushioning, so there's constant needles punching directly against the bone. whereas the upper arm, inner thigh or butt cheek are all fleshy areas. and seem to absorb the pain better... at least, in comparison.

why d'ya think so many old timers got drunk as skunks before getting tattoed? my friend used meditation and hypnosis, and combined with a postive outlook, the amount of pain felt was negligible.
