I've had my belly button pierced since September of 2003. I've almost had it a year, so it's pretty much near fully healed.
Today when I was taking a shower, I noticed that the skin in between the barbell was really really thin, in fact it looked as though that I thought it was going to fall out! I can pretty much see the barbell in between my skin.
I called the place I got it done at, and they told me that the piercing might have been done too shallow. (Could this be because the piercer had me stand up?) Anyway, I was wondering if someone can tell me how this happens! It was perfect up until now, I don't understand!
They told me to come in tomorrow because the new piercer they have Kelly, is in tomorrow, and I'm familiar with her but I just can't wait until tomorrow to know! lol I'm inpatient.
Can anyone tell me what I have to do to fix this? They told me that I have to probably get it done again, will I have to pay for it since it was their fault that the guy pierced it too shallow? I really don't wanna take it out and wait another 8 months to a year for it to heal!
I read online that it could be because they pierced it too shallow or my body is rejecting the piercing.
Please help!

The only person who could tell if it was done too shallow or rejecting is you.
Here's a few questions: Has it always been this close to the surface? Is the thinning of the skin something new?
If you said no and yes to the above, chances are you are having a rejection. Usually these are very painful and happen much, much earlier in the healing process but then again, if the body decides to change it's mind, there's not much that can be done.
Standing up should have nothing to do with how deep or shallow a piercing is done, but it is bad practice as many people get light-headed from piercing and standing would lead to a much greater chance of fainting.
The only way to fix it is to take out the present piercing, LET IT HEAL COMPLETELY and then redo it. If you get repierced right away, the two piercings may merge and you'll wind up with the same problem all over again. You have a much greater chance of this if you try and repierce very closely to the first piercing.
Any questions concerning money should be directed to the body art establishment in question.

Hey, thanks. I went just about 20 minutes ago and the girl told me it was rejecting and to take it out. As I was taking it out, it ripped out cause I couldn't get the ball undone. She said wait 3 or 4 months to repierce it, it might reject again but it might not if the scar tissue holds it in. I took some pictures to show you.. See it ripped out I hope it heals okay.. Do you know if it's going to heal like that? I hope not!

Yeah, that is a classic rejection. The key sign of a rejection is the ring moving towards the surface of the body, like it's being pushed out.
When I got my navel pierced, I couldn't wear jeans for about two years while the piercing established itself as any pressure on the piercing would make it flare up again.
Make sure you get a bit of supplement Vitamin C and zinc while healing as that helps. I've heard that applying a cream with vitamin E in it helps a wound heal with less scar tissue, but don't have any specific experience with this myself. You might try it.

The same thing happened to me. I have a scar a little smaller then a dime now. I had mine pierced twice, the first time there were just a bunch of problems so I took it out. I had it pierced again.
The second time the guy went through some of the scar tissue and I had it maybe close to a year and as it healed it was getting shallower and my body rejected it. It was either my body or the guy who pierced it was the problem, but either way the skin was so thin that it ripped.
I took some vitamin e supplements and also put vitamin e oil on my navel. You can also use neosporin or something similar to it. Once it's started to heal some and it isn't quite so fresh (say a few days) there's something called Mederma that helps reduce the appearance of old and new scars. It actually does work, but you have to put it on a couple times a day I believe. Anyways you can get it at any drugstore. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice
It's been a few days now... and it's healing up pretty good. You can still see where it ripped but it's not as like, "devil horn-ish" as it was, lol... It's nearly flat, but it's hard, like when I poke on it, but anyways... Thanks agian.
The piercer said I could repierce it but it would either reject again or the scar tissue would hold it in place... I'm afraid it would hurt more the second time than the first though, getting it pierced I mean, lol.
I don't even know if I want to get it done again, I mean I've nearly had it a year and it rejected, I don't want to waste money and I don't want to go back to washing like two or three times a day to risk infection when I've alraedy been through that and thought the worst was over with!

Oh and the vitamin E thing...
My piercer told me to buy vitamin e gel capsules that you would take orally, break them open and rub the liquid on the inside on it to help the scar. So yes you are right
