I voted!!! My Great Danes sleep either beside my bed - my side of the bed OR in my son's room right beside his bed.
When we first chose our Dane puppies, we went to basic obedience. I will not have a giant breed that is not leashed trained - no being dragged down the street by the dog!! LOL
It worked out very well and we have all become one big family. These guys are huge couch potatoes that also make great kiddo pillows when the family watches television. They are sweet and gentle and look very fierce.
They will BECOME fierce should anyone threaten my son or myself. I love my big "marmaduke"s!!

We grew up with a cockapoo (cocker spaniel - poodle) and it slept in whatever bed it found handy

My husband doesn't want the chihuahua in bed with us, since he walks all over the bed, licks himself, and otherwise drives Dan nuts (he's a light sleeper). So the Chi and our Cattle Dog share a doggy bed in Dan's warm office at night. The third dog - Ghanima, a basenji - sleeps with us, since she doesn't move around and has the sense to stay at our feet.
But if it was up to me, they'd all join us in bed.

Our dog sleeps in the kitchen, but we have to keep him in a dog cage otherwise we have a problem with him wandering all over the house. Luckily he doesnt whine to be let out and is now used to it. If we let him out he whines to be let on the bed (he cant jump up yet cos hes too small). But I'm not sure of the way forward whether to keep it like this then progress to a dog bed in the kitchen and im not sure how best to do this - any advice anyone?

Pauline, I think that's really just a matter of choice. If you want your dog to sleep in the kitchen and he's already used to sleeping there in his cage, that's great. If he's content in the crate, there's no reason why you must "progress to a dog bed", as long as there's a mat or some kind of soft bedding in the crate for comfort.
If you decide that you want him to sleep in your bedroom instead, then you might want to get a doggy bed and get him used to sleeping in it before he's big enough to jump on your bed. If you start letting him sleep on your bed, it will be hard to convince him to go back to his own bed. I know this from experience... a queen size bed is really not large enough for 2 people and 2 Weimaraners, but my Weims think it is.

We took our Rottie to obidence training as well. She initially slept in a crate when she was a puppy...mostly b/c we were housetraining her. However, as she got better, we just moved her bed out of the crate and into the other side of the kitchen, then the living room, etc...until the bed made it to our bedroom.

Our dogs have their own room and their crates are in there. During the day they sleep wherever they feel like sleeping, in my bed, in the floor, on the couch. We have 2 danes and a sheltie and there is no way all 5 of us could fit in our bed at night!! Connie

Simba, my german shepherd, sleeps in the hallway, outside my bedroom door. I'm a very light sleeper, so I don't like him in the room with me. He, I guess, feels he needs to be close, so he stays just outside the doorway, ready to trip me when I make that late night trip to the bathroom.
