I'm a big supporter of adopting rather than breeding, and I adore mutts of any shape or size. As long as they're on the lower end of the energy scale, and affectionate, they're perfect for me.

But if I had to pick a breed, I would say Rhodesian Ridgeback .... ours is the most wonderful dog I've ever met! Some are too high-energy for me, but most seem very like her.

Her temperment couldn't be more perfect for my family: she is easy-going, devoted, affectionate, patient, and protective; she is extremely intelligent and easy to train BUT she has to accept our requests as appropriate --- hehehe.

For example, I taught her in about two nights flat to get off the bed and sweetly wait for a release command so that I have the space and the time to get settled in -- you can't try to squeeze in around 100 lbs of long-legged ridgeback as well another good-sized mutt AND a husband unless you're comfortable with contortionism in your sleep! After more than 3 yrs, I almost never even give the command anymore. She knows my routine, and gets out of my way right when I need her to without my even asking, then climbs back in to snuggle -- yay! There are many other examples of behaviors she's learned without trouble or complaint that make her a wonderful, easy-to-live-with companion, mostly having to do with relinquishing space or objects as directed, waiting in place when required, and allowing certain types of handling. Guests constantly act surprised by how pliant and sweet-natured she is.

On the other hand, repeated, pointless sits, downs, stays; constructed agility-type obstacle-manuevering; and especially "tricks" like roll-over, shake, and play-dead were complete failures despite repeated early attempts. She pretends not to have a clue what we're asking her to do, and we just stopped trying a long time ago. After all, they're cute, but she seems to just KNOW they don't serve a practical purpose.

And yanno what? That's all just fine with me. I admire her spirit.

I have a Mini Schnauzer, and he's the best dog I've ever had. Doesn't shed hair so he's clean in the house. He's well behaved, cute very friendly and super affeconate. He's doing very well in obedience class too. He's been the star pupil for a couple of months now so that show he's smart too.

At the moment I have a Labrador X German Shepherd called Othello. I love him dearly, he's more Labby than Shep and has the most handsome face.

But my favourite breeds are Whippets and Labradors.

Have to chirp in for the "ankle buddies." We have a miniature pinscher named Hans and he is a load! Keeps us laughing and on our toes for sure.
Here's his personal web site:

No fair (whining)
I can't choose just one, so I'll go for one big, on little;

The big dogs: Labrador retrievers - I personally love black ones, i know that color doesn't make a bit of difference when it comes to how sweet or good a dog is, but black ones are so beautiful (followed by chocolate). But labs are sweet, loyal, great w/ kids, protective of their families, need I go on?-

The small dogs: Pomeranians (teacup) I used to have a black one that weighed 5 lbs full grown, His name was fritz and He was the sweetest thing! Such a cuddler. Then he would crack me up by getting these little bursts of energy and go tearing off in circles around the living room 90 miles an hour! Puffball on speed- The funniest thing was our cat outweighed him, and would normally ignore him, until Fritz would want him to play. Then the frotz would do the doggy equivalent of basketball fakeouts, jump-in, leap-out, jum-in, leap-out. The cat would stare at him for about 2 min. then calmly time his strike, and (no claws) reach out and bowl him over backwards. The dumb dog actually thought this was part of the game, and I swear I could see him going, "do it again, do it again!"

Why me? What did I do to deserve this?
(go on, ask)

All dogs are great but I have to vote for the Basset. My Basset goes to work with me every day and she is absolutely adorable. Everyone loves her and looks forward to coming to the office to see her. Of course, those sad eyes will win over most anyone.
