I don't think you can actually defeat the urns.
You don't need to capture them either, so I guess there isn't really any need to defeat it.

you can kill them, but its kind of pointless to try, honestly, if you do kill them, they just blow up anyway.

well, i heard if you give them a certain item they give you some really cool stuff. i guess there has been a magick urn in every final fantasy like that. i think in ff8 if you give it a pheonix down it will give you 9999 eye drops or somethin like that.

in FF7 the magic pots give you 2000 AP

in FFX they are almost totalyl useless. The only good thing they are for is getting the overdrive mode "Loner" and "Ally" (i think that is what it is called. Its the OD Mode that charges up OD when you get a to select a move)

Go to the calm lands with the airship. South of the shop there is a guy with a chocobo. Talk to him and choose "let me train one". Win the first training and you will be allowed to get the chocobo for free.

Still waiting for FFXII??

The master tonberries require you to have highish stats around 60+ maybe?
All you need to do is cast Demi to cut their life in 1/4 or 3/8 if you have magic booster.
Once you start hitting for around 2500 capture it hoping you can hit for more than 7499 damage in one physical attack.
They are reasonably rare to encounter so capture it the first time you see them
