Square has to try sumthing new each time they create a new Final Fantasy coz they wouldn't progress and develop. there is no point staying in the same position they are trying sumthing new, innovative and refreshing, and although X-2 isn't my fave FF (in fact i too, find the girly thing a bit too much, and i am a girl  ) i appreciate the work and thought that has gone into making it something so different from all the others. which is what they try and do with each game.
I know that there are lots of side missions to be completed which is cool, but i think it lacks a central plot
well the object of the game.. is rather obvious. u are searching for Tidus, after Yuna sees him in a sphere. so they are hunting for more, to try and get more clues. each mission has something to do with hunting for a sphere or surrounding ppl that you know (a lot of the time, relating stuf bak to X, which is cool). but i can see that after a few missions... u can easily lose ur way and get bored with completing mission after mission and not really getting sumwhere u find answers any of the plot questions
i think it sucks that to properly understand the whole game and make the plot fantastic, you really have to get 100%... the 1st time me and my boyfriend played it we got about 70% or sumthing and we were a bit confused and thought 'riiiite' when it all ended. 100% xplains sooo many more things (which i've done now) which is probably why i'm all 'wow x-2 is fab etc' hehe
