Well, I want to thank you guys for the tips on what to bring to the food/wine buff's house. Though I ended up having to get a totally different wine, it went well.

I wanted to get the Vidal, but when I saw that it was $65 a bottle, I asked the guy at the shop for something similar that was not nearly as expensive (that's something I could have splurged on if it weren't so late into gift-giving time). He recommended a 2003 Chateau Hallet Sauternes and I gotta say it wasn't bad. I went with it cause I know nothing about dessert wines and he said that it tasted very similar to Vidal. It was sweet but not too sweet. I don't know if it rates as a classy dessert wine or even very good (I'm more of a sour red kind of gal), but it wasn't bad.

Let me know if you guys and gals know anything about this wine--if it wasn't a great pick, at least I'll know not to do it again.

Oh, and Mrphph--I intend to try out that Israeli wine you recommended (sounds intriguing).
