I'm 28, tall, slender, with an oval face and small to medium sized facial features. My hair is currently in a rather drab anchorwoman's haircut (for lack of a better term). I've always admired ultra short hair on women, in the vein of Jamie Lee Curtis and even a little shorter.

I've decided that I finally will go for it this summer (what better time?!). I want the back cut close with clippers and over the ear with longer layers on top. My question is how short can I go and still have it look feminine (my face is very feminine-looking, so I think I can take it a little shorter than normal)? I was thinking 1 1/2 to 2 inches on top, but I'd like other opinions, please.

It sounds like you won't have a problem with looking feminine. With a very feminine face, you can go pretty short.

Your cut sounds great.
I hope you will post a picture when you get it cut.

Thanks, Lynne. I really want to crop it short but am still a bit reluctant. I spoke with a friend of mine who said that the best thing to do is to go to a barbershop because stylists probably won't get it short enough. From the other post where the woman cut it clippered really short, I'll be sure to ask exactly what clipper guards are used! So, tomorrow, I'm (scared and excited) and taking off to a barbershop for my new really funky look.

Personally, I would be very careful going to a barber shop. You'll want a barber stylist.

All the hairdressers I know do many very short style and would have no problem going short enough for you. The difference is that they are used to designing a style that is attractive on the client and many barbers are used to cutting it off in about 10 - 15 minutes at most.

Well, I did it, although I'm not so sure about the results. The top is just over an inch long (with a longer fringe) and the sides and back are tapered very tight. My husband hates it, and I'm still deciding. It was fun to go to a barbershop -- maybe it was the forbidden aspect that I wasn't supposed to be there. I'll probably get one more ultra short haircut in another month or so, then let it grow out. It just feels weird being so short!

Thanks for letting us know. I'm sure it will take a while to get used to it and you'll have to do that before you know whether you like it. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have had two ultra short styles in my life. The first I didn't like so much and growing it out was a pain. The second I liked much better and I think having the right styling products helped. I do not like to have it razor clipped in the back but I do like the texturizing of razor scissors for short short hair. I felt more feminine with the second hair cut. I like messy looking ultra short hairstyles so wearing it was so easy!

Good luck with finding just the right short hairstyle. I have my hair long again now, it's more my personality I think to have long hair. Boy growing out those short styles really takes patience!
