Have you seen these around New England?

Am in Alabama and found 3 of these very pretty caterpillars on my front door this a.m.((which is metal)(the door stays cool due to it being metal and the a/c inside cools it inside and out)...wondered if they were after the cool feel? I've never seen these before but was very careful not to touch. I did remove them so they wouldn't drop inside the house when the door opened. And you're right...they are beautiful and curled into a neat little ball when I dropped them onto a towel to transport out to the yard.
