My son did NOT understand pee on the potty and had no body awareness. We bought a night time bed wetting device from leaps and bounds. The alarm went off with a drop of fluid{this would stop anyone from whatever they were doing!]. We rushed him to the potty so he could finish and rewarded him with a pee party! He got his favorite toy after. He was trained in a week. He was ok with the alarm{we taped over the sound as it was VERY loud]. Which is something you really need to consider when buying. It is not returnable. We are considering turning it around for bowel training as he doesn't understand or make the connection there. GOOD LUCK! [color:"red"] [/color]

Did you ever try the toilet training book for children on the Autism Spectrum?

I have not tried to do this yet for my son Matthew who is nine, still working on the bottle issue at feeding and then this will be attempted once that has been successful.

Would be great to have both done by the time school starts next year.

My son is 4 now and non-verbal and is not toilet trained, but recently he wants to use the toilet, out of the blue, he has chronic constipation so when we would see him trying to go we would sit him on the toilet, not so much to get him trained but more for the sitting position, but he goes now, even pee. Only during the day and then only when we catch him, otherwise he will take his diaper off in the hall outside the bathroom and pee and poop on the floor, which is nice. But now I don't have as many stresses about training him. I think it will be easier than I thought, *fingers crossed*. Congrats on your success, I can't wait for the day when I won't have to buy diapers!!!!!!

Yes. Brett is still non-verbal at age 6. He used the sensor at age 4 and was successfully using PECS. He now has a Dynamyte communication device. We will ask him if he needs to pee and he will tell us but he has initiated only a few times. I am going to try the sensor backwards for BM training. He will go EVERY night after we put him to bed no matter how long we sit him on the pot. I'm hoping he'll hate the sensor and want to go before we put it on. Thanks for the info on insurance. I did try when Brett was 3. Our insurance would cover these terrible generic "adult" size s. They were not only huge but when he wet he wet right threw everything. I am going to check again just to be sure nothing has changed. We have blue cross and medicaid...so you'd think!!!!

YES!!! MEDICAID IS NOW PAYING...after 6 years of diapers....I can't tell you how excited I am. They were very helpful at wal-mart!

Sorry it took me so long to reply Bonnie, but you know how it is....never enough time to do everything on the list!! I am getting diapers covered as well now. Not like I have any extra $ now though, how did I afford the diapers before?? Its strange, but still, its awesome not to have to buy them anymore, PHEW! Shawn will pee on the toilet every time we put him on, but with preschool and therapy, its hard to get the consistancy of going to the bathroom on the toilet not the diaper when there are so many people working with him right now! I still hope that he will just want to go only on the toilet one day! I just have to have patience, which is in short supply lately. I had a CT scan done in Dec. as I have had DAILY headaches for almost 4 years now, so my DR. tells me that there are some spots on my brain which he wants a neurologist to look at. Sounds reasonable, he said they are probably cysts, no biggie. I saw another DR the other day to get more painkillers and he looked at the CT results and told me that he was worried about it. He asked how old I was, I'm 33, he said he's never seen this kind of thing in someone my age, only usually in heavy duty alcoholics about 60years old. I have never been a drinker at all, maybe once a month, when I was like 20, I would go out. He said, "well, thats a puzzle" So I am concerned now!! Why didn't my DR tell me that?? Anyhoo, back on topic, thats why I have had my plate especially full these days!!
