The author was :BHADANTACARIYA BUDDHAGHOSA,translated by
E.W.BURLINGAME as "Buddhist Legends.

To all or none,

The Dhammapada contains 26 chapters.Today and for a few days we will start with chapter I ,Twin pairs.it contains 20verses.
Too day we will look at the 4 first verses. So here goes..

Chapter1,Twin Pairs
ORIGIN

Mind always comes first
Mind is of all states the primer
By mentality are all things initiated
By thought of Mind are all phenomena Formed.
So-if with good intention one thinks, speaks or acts,
Joy surely follows one like the never a leaving shadow.
HOWEVER!!!!
If with evil intention one thinks, speaks or acts
Pain certainly follows one like the wheel follows the car.

BURNING2-3
Those absorbed in such accusations as:
He/She/They abused ,hurt, did me or us wrong,
Whether right or wrong !such foolish ones only prolong
Own pain by being obsessed by their own anger.

HOWEVER!!!
those freed of these accusations:
He/She/They abused, hurt, did me or us wrong:
Nothing,whether right or wrong-so what!!!
such clever ones stop own pain by relinquishing all anger.

That is enough for today .Great words to ponder on

DOING BAD-15

Here and now the bad-doers suffers... Even so after passing away and reemerging ,the doer of wrong reaps only pain and regret...
So both here and there the fool with wrong&evil behavior badly
done suffers from the inevitable results of prior actions.

DOING GOOD-16

Here and now the good-doer rejoices...Even so after passing away and reemerging, the doer of good reaps only Joy and satisfaction...

Advantageous is the taming of the thoughts ,which otherwise set

GUARDING-36Thoughts are of exceedingly subtle nature, hard to see,
invisible,untouchable,momentary,emerging &jumping when& wherever
they like! The clever one therefore observes and guards these ever
anging thoughts.Guarded thoughts brings Happiness!!!!

DAMPENING-37

Thoughts by themselves wander ,light as fantsies ,though still hidden in Mind. Those who subdue thoughts are freed from the bondage of temptation.

STEADYING-38

The one whose Mind is not steady, who does not know what is true Dharma ,whose faith waivers -such one never attains perfected INSIGHT

That is it for today.

Did some research on the 7 Links to enlightenment.
Text is by Venerable Bhikkhu Samahita

The 7 Links to Awakening lead to awareness!

A not very well known Bhikkhu once asked the Blessed Buddha:
Venerable Sir, 'The 7 Links to Awakening, The 7 Links to Awakening' is it
always said. In what way are they called Links to Awakening?
They lead to Enlightenment, friend, it is therefore they indeed are called
Links to Awakening. Here, Bhikkhu, when one trains, cultivates and refines:

1: The Awareness Link to Awakening: sati-sambojjhanga.

2: The Investigation Link to Awakening: dhammavicaya-sambojjhanga.

3: The Energy Link to Awakening: viriya-sambojjhanga.

4: The Joy Link to Awakening: pīti-sambojjhanga.

5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening: passaddhi-sambojjhanga.

6: The Concentration Link to Awakening: samādhi-sambojjhanga.

7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening: upekkhā-sambojjhanga.

based upon seclusion, disillusion, and ceasing, maturing & culminating in release,
then these Seven Links to Awakening, becomes Noble and liberating. They lead
any one who trains them all out, they lead to utter revulsion, to intense disgust,
to dispassion, to cessation of craving and greed, to peace, to direct knowledge,
to complete destruction of suffering. They lead to Enlightenment, to Nibbāna...

Chapter XI AGING VERSES 147 TO 150

THE BODY -147

See the painted puppet ,one big mass of sores , A diseased form
frame of skin drawn upon bones,
often possessing many evils thoughts,a thing much regarded & beloved, yet it is neither of stable nor lasting nature....

FORM-148

This body is worn out,a fragile form ,a nest of disease,
a rotting mass of deception since its life surely ends in DECAY AND DEATH.....

BONES-149

Like withered leaves scattered by autumn wind, are those pale
withened bone. What pleasure can there be in them!

MY BODY-150

It is a bag held up by bones, plastered with skin, full of blood and flesh.in it lives only aging.sickness, death, pride and deceit

O.K.why did I choose these verses today!
Went to see aspecialist today about the two 1 inch tears in my shoulder.Surprise they are not results of my backstabbing.NOPE
just worn out issues tendons that split due to OVERUSE ans AGE.

She gave me a shot of Cortisone and that is it ladies and gentlemen

I used by body so hard that now pieces will tear like that in
most of the joints ,and articulations.

The first time I read the Dhammapada this is what I read AGING.

Do you know what ,you should see the smile on my face .

My name is Joly,of all the Joly' s I am the first to get this old
they all died at 60 or before.

What a Man Buddha was.

what he has made .Such one is the SUPREME!
-A COURAGEOUS CONQUEROR.....

RADIANT -98

Whether in village or forest,on land,in the sea
or the mountain ,where Arahats dwell all is indeed delightfull, subtle and refined.

SOLITARY-99

Delighting are the forests ,where the passionatecommon folks do not haunt their banal pleasures
Ther the cooled ones find the Bliss not of this WORLD."

Today we shall start
.....CHAPTER VIII; THOUSANDS-SAHASSA

EXACT ELEVATION-100

Even a thousand words will not work
if lacking meaning,essence,or relevance.
Better is a few words exact and clear,
promoting peace and calm.

COMMENTS:
Look before you leap
Think before you speak.

ULTRA-CUT-101

Even a thousand sentences can be meaningless.
Better is a single sentence ,whereby one is released.

POINTING OUT-102

Even reciting a hundred verses made of words of no meaning .
Better is a single word of Dhamma ,whereby one awakens.

CONQUEROR-103

Even after conquering a million men,one is better off by conquering oneself.

VICTORY-104

Victory over self is superior to victory overothers.
Winning self-control & you are forever in power.

UNDEFEATABLE-105

Neither a God ,Demon,Devil, nor Brahma can undo the victory of one who has won self-control.

This version of the dhammapada is from Sri-Lanka author unknown.

We are in CHAPTER VII THE THOUSANDS

USELESS-106

Though a man ,month after month offer a thousand pieces of money, even for a hundred years ,he better honor even for a single moment a Noble, who has trained himself .

ATTENDING TO THE IRRELEVANT-107

Though a man, day after day, should burn a sacrifice, bathe ceremoniously or do whatever ritual he better honor even for a single instant the Noble disciple of the BUDDHA,who is the well trained ,& well restrained

EMPTY RITUAL-108

Whatsoever daily offer, sacrifice or oblation made even for year,
the resulting merit is not worth a quarter of reverence for those straight ,upright and righteous.

REGULAR REVERENCE-109

For one in the habit of honoring and respecting with salutation the Elders four things increase;
Age ,Beauty, Happiness,& power!!!
CLEAN & COMPOSED-110

Even if one should live a hundred years,if immortal & uncontrolled ,better it would be to live just a single day morally & meditating"

touching this deathless blissful state,

To all or none,

Text by What-Buddha-Said.net Author unknowb.
today we start CHAPTER X VIOLENCEANDA.One of my favorite, because it speaks of sentient beings ,crusades for vegetarism ,shows the karma attached to hurting others.
WE have all been hurt in life and have hurt others to.
so:
.....CHAPTER X VIOLENCE DANDA.....

ULTIMITE WRONG-129

ALL sentient beings feel pain from violence...
All sentient beings fear death in panic!
Seeing other beings are like Oneself;
Treating other beings like oneself;
One should neverEVER harm or kill...

ETERNAL LAW-130

ALL sentient beings feel pain from violence
ALL sentient beinds love their life.
Seeing other beings are like oneself
Treating other beings are like oneself;
Treating other beings like oneself
One shouldNEVER ever harm or KILL...

LOSS-131

Whoever injures,with weapon or stick,beings
searching for their happiness-when after death
seeking some Happiness ,such fool never find it .

GAIN-132

Whoever NEVER injures, neither with weapon nor stick,
beings searching for their HAPPINESS-when after death
seeking same HAPPINESS ,such gentle one always GAINS it!

BOOMERANG-133

Do not ever speak harsh & angry words,
Such is always retaliated with angry talk.
Painful indeed is arrogant speech.
The inevitable retaliation invariably falls back on such proud boaster.

SILENCED-134

If silent as a broken bell, such one is close to Nibbana,
and far away from arrogance."

Exactly as a cowherd drives cows forward, even & exactly so do aging, sickness & death drive all beings forwards towards the END.

BURNT-136

When doing evil the fool does not recognize
the bad as wrong.Afterwards such simpleton is burnt ,as with a fire lit by himself.

10 CONSEQUENCES OF ILL ACTION-137

The fool may suffer acute pain, disaster, injures of body, severe sickness ,insanity, lawsuits from police, accusations, loss of wealth, fire burns his house & right after death,he re-arises in the painful worlds or the
NIRAYA HELLS.

FUTILITY-138-139-140-141

to all or none,
Today we shall look at CHAPTER XII SELF-ATTA-

AWAKE-157

if one regards oneself as precious ,one should guard this life well;
Both in youth,in middle age,& old age & during all the 3 watches of the night one should keep aware and awake .

PROPER ORDER-158

First one should establish oneself in what is right.
Then from there ,one can well instruct others.Doing so ,the clever one will not be criticized.

SITTING-159

First one should make oneself ,exactly that which one instructs others to be...Only well tamed oneself is one able to tame others.Self is hard to tame in praxis, yet not so in theory"
Loong's comment-Why should one want to tame others/

SAVIOUR-160

Self is indeed self's only savior. Who else can save you? With oneself well tamed, one gains a savior hard to otherwise find.

BACKLASH-161

By self alone is evil done.Even so is evil born of self, originated i srlf, initiated by & in self. This self crushes the foollike a diamond - drill grinds even hard and precious stones .

DOMINATED-162

The one whose evil has gripped the whole of his mind ,like a creeper gradually overgow even the tallest tree,is, without compare
HIS WORST ENEMY.

n.b.The word Savior can also be spelled saviour.
creeper is an animal or a plant that can grip to a tree.

ASYMMETRY-163

Easy and swift is it to do what is detrimental ,bad both to oneself and for others. While that .which is advantageous to both oneself & others,is quite difficult to do .

SELF-DESTRUCTIVE-VIEW-164

The fool ,who absorbed in false views reviles theDhamma of the
arahats ,the Noble & the Righteous, thereby sow & later reaps his own destruction .

NO-OTHER-165

By self alone ,is harm done.By self alone ,does one suffer from own evil.By self alone, is harm left undone.
By self alone ,is one purified & thereby saved.
Both destruction is work of self .
NO ONE CAN PURIFY ANOTHER.

GOOD FOR-BOTH-166

Letno-one neglect own good for the good of another.
even if seemingly important.Focused on own good ,and own freedom ,one should learn and practice towards that.

This concludes CHAPTERXII

today we shall look at CHAPTER XIII;WORLD-LOKA

INDULGING-167

One should neither live a low life, nor a careless life, nor have fase views, nor be captivated by this world.

INVESTMENT-168

Exerting oneself, not careless, one should live the Dhamma.By living
according to the Dhamma, harmony is assured & one sleeps happily here & in the next world.

HERE & THERE-169

One should practice this dhamma well, avoiding sloppy or inaccurate..one practicing the Buddha_Dhamma both in spirit and letter lives blissfully both here in this world & the next to come.

UNSEEN-170

As lasting as a bursting bubble;
As illusive as a mirage ;
One regarding all wordly life exactly so is forever unseen by The King of Death.

GLITTER-171

Come see this world is as a painted postcard.wherein the fools helplessly sink, while the clever -remains free & detached.

BRIGHT-172

The one ,who was careless earlier, but not anymore, illuminates this world shining just as bright ,as the full moon free from clouds .

CLEARED-173

The one who cover past mistakes with good doings ;such one indeed illuminates this world.as the full moon freed from cloud."
