On this day in 1977 – September 5th – NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft.

Voyager 1 is now almost 161 AU from Earth - that's 161 times farther from us than we are to the Sun. It's in interstellar space.

On this day in 2008 – September 5th – ESA's Rosetta Mission made its closest approach to asteroid (2867) Steins at a distance of 800 km.

This was Rosetta's first encounter with an asteroid and it produced data about the asteroid that couldn't have been obtained from Earth.

On this day in 2004 – September 8th – The orbiter explored the lunar exosphere and dust in the Moon's vicinity.

Some samples were salvaged, as some of the contamination could be dealt with. The mission's major science objectives were achieved.

On this day in 2016 – September 8th – NASA launched OSIRIS-REx, an asteroid study and sample return mission.

The spacecraft arrived at asteroid Bennu in December 2018, carried out detailed reconnaissance of the asteroid and collected samples. It's expected to return the sample capsule to Sept. 24, 2023 as main spacecraft journeys on to asteroid Apophis for a 2029 rendezvous.

On this day in 1857 – September 9th – American astronomer James Keeler was born in La Salle, Illinois.

Keeler was the director of the University of Pittsburgh's Allegheny Observatory in 1891, and later of the Lick Observatory in California. Among other things, he was known for his studies of the rings of Saturn, confirming that Saturn’s ring system is not a solid unit, and for expanding astronomers' understanding of nebulae through an extended series of photographs using a large telescope.

On this day in 1717 – September 11th – Swedish astronomer Pehr Wilhelm Wargentin was born in Sunne, Sweden.

He was the first director of the Stockholm Observatory, and is probably best remembered today for his extensive study and observation of Jupiter’s satellites.
