Literacy is a lifelong learning experience. Children with disabilities may have a hard time growing in this area, but it is possible. There are ways to increase the literacy skills in older literacy learners.

Building Literacy in Older Children

I think one thing which helps is having stories the children actively want to read. We have more and more stories which feature physically and mentally challenged main characters, which is great. People often like to read about characters who seem like them.

I also think graphic novels are a great stepping stone. They draw people into reading who might normally not enjoy reading at all.
