To all or none,
The text you are about to read is from the Thera lineage .
Mahayana ,conserve their sacred texts in another way not mentionned in this book. The book is BOUDHISME ,QUESTIONS ET REPONSES,author
is Edouard Finnhe book is in french. So the text will be a translation and also a resume of the text of the question.

"Question IV WHAT IS MEANT BY THE THREE BASKET.?"
They are an enourmous amount of writingsthat constitute 17 times the Bible!!!It is kept in Burma 2 separate Pagodas.

The Pali Canon is divised in 3 seperate (baskets)
The first bears the name in sanskrit of
......................SUTRAPITAKA.................

It is the sum of Buddhas 82,000 discourses,The Theravadins distinguish various ooks called Nikaya, but the Mahayana call them Agama."
loong's footnote ,Mahayana phylosophy is more based on Sutras
than the Pali Canon. If I am wrong ,The moderator Lisa should
correct me.
";Basket #2 VIJNANAPITAKA,
Is a collection of Monastic Rules .A monk has 227 vows to live by
and women have about a100 more.

THE THIRD BASKET-ABHIDHARNAPITAKA.

Litteraly the Supreme Doctrine. Is is a long tra
eaty of physics, methaohysics, psychology,of Buddhism. Some say that it would have been cited by Buddha himself. If it is not the case ,the way the text are written strangely resemble the style of the
Buddha."

We wil stop here in the next post the titles of the 7 Theravadine books shall be given with a resume of the contents.

As far as I know the Triple Jewel of Dharma, Sangha and Buddha are acknowledged and honored by all Buddhist lineages. So it is one of the themes that brings everyone together, and this idea of taking refuge in them is such a beautiful one. On a larger scale outside of Buddhism I think of the triple jewel as including all those who have committed themselves to spiritual teachings (Dharma), spiritual community (Sangha), and spiritual guidance (Buddha.) So that is a wonderful thing, it really creates this sense of being connected to all beings.

It's interesting that most religions have some version of this triad. In Christianity we have the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost/Spirit. I think of Father as Dharma, Son as Sangha (because Christ represented here on earth as a human amongst others), and Holy Spirit/Ghost as Buddha (as in Buddha-mind.) Then in Hinduism you have trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. In nature traditions father-mother-child are often used to represent a symbolic spiritual triad, or father sun, mother earth, and child water. There are many versions.

Anyway, in Buddhism I think this idea of taking refuge in these is really so powerful, and although the refuge vows are slightly different in each tradition, this basic is the same.

yes, of the three parts of the pali canon, mahayana draws upon the sutras the most, if that is what you are asking. you could say most have their own versions of the other 2 baskets, because they have their own version of the vows (basket #2) although many are quite similar to the theraveda ones, and their own sutra commentaries (which is essentially what a lot of the 3rd basket is - commentaries on sutras.)

my other comment above about the 3 jewels was posted in response your prior post, i didn't see this one until just now..

Wait, I am confused, he is calling the third basket Tipitaka? I am used to all 3 basksets being called the Tipitaka, and the third is Abidharma?

Also, it's worth noting that within Theravada there are multiple schools. It's my understanding that there are variations between them, particularly in the Abidharma - that some have more or less books than 7...

The text you are about to read is translated from the french.
"book's name"bouddhisme questions & reponses "
by Thierry Pasquier.

Today;s question is :"
DOES BUDDHISM HAVE A CERTAIN VIEW OF THE UNIVERSE":
" The text you are about to read is altered in some way ,shortened.
within the scope of my own knowledge."
"For the Buddhist ,the UNIVERSE is a phenomenom.
A man, a rock are phenomenoms.Rain ,wind ,sun earth are phenomenom They all have in commun one caracteristic.
A-Impermanence(Anicca,skt Anitya)
This charatiristic shows that all pnenomenum have a beginning, middle and an end.Everything is subject to this chataristiclove, glory, power, body.
B Fuffering or DUKKha same in sanskrit.

This catharistic comes from the previous .The end of everything
brings suffering(dukkha)

C-The absence of a self(ego)-Anatta(skt Anatman)

There exist no phenomenum that leaves a trace after it is gone.
NO SOUL,NO I NO ME ,there exists an Ultimatr Reality but we cannot perceive it our mind being obstructed by so many conditionning.

This being said ,there exists many other worlds or realm(that is my comment)

which vary according to lineages.

Let;s look at the Tibeyan lineage for instance.

1 the world of devas
2 the world of Titans (Asura) Icall it the world of gods
3 the world of men
4 the world of animals
5 the world of hungry ghosts (peta skt preta)
6 the world of demons(niraya skt naraka)

However one must not forget that all these worlds are subject to
the 3 above mentionned conditions."

Translated and partly written by

loong.
a simple buddhist
n.b.I do beleive in these worlds but I would in my case add the 7 heavens again subject to impermanence.

I will add that many practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism, especially Westerners, do not view these realms as literal. They view them as a way of talking about different states of awareness we experience here in this world. The same for deities - they are approached as symbolic representations of states we ourselves have inside us - different expressions of enlightened awareness.

As someone moves through Tibetan practices, it becomes less and less about viewing realms and deities as outside yourself or as inside yourself, because the division between outer and inner dissolves.

But yes, as you say, all beings and realms are subject to the 3 marks of existence (dukkha, annica and anatta.)
