I have read your article and it was really amazing. These things are actually very necessary to start basics. Lovely article.

Hi Ro,

I have two types of mint but they keep getting eaten by snails! Do you have a problem with this?

What are some natural snail repellents? Is there some magickal solution?

Lori, yes, the snails go after my mint as well! Who would guess the little guys would be so aggressive? laugh If your mint is in the ground, I would recommend transplanting it into a pot with a saucer to catch the water drainage. Then set the pot with its saucer into a saucer with a larger diameter -- about an inch between its edge and the edge of your water saucer.

Then fill the outer saucer with rock salt (the kind you get in boxes at the grocery store to make ice cream with). The snails will not cross the salt barrier because salt is lethal to them. Meanwhile the salt will not leach into the water or soil of your mint, nor will it be dissolved when you water your mint because you have the dual saucer arrangement. Hope this helps!

Brilliant, Ro!

Thank you so much. Do you know other things about snails? Where do they go during the day? Do they burrow into the soil?

You're very welcome, Lori. I know snails try to avoid dry conditions so I think they burrow into the soil, go under rocks, into crawl spaces, under the leaves, in the shade, wherever they can find shelter from the sun.

Hi Ro-

Great article! I tried to start an herb garden, using seeds, this spring. Your article has inspired me to try again. Is it too late in the summer season?

Yvonne, thank you. I'm glad you found it helpful! To plant outside might be too late now, depending on how far north you are. But you could start some herbs in pots and bring them inside before the first frost to put in a sunny windowsill and overwinter them there.
