Washboard - also called rubboard, scrubboard, frottoir.... a simple old-fashioned ridged washboard scraped with a spoon to get a percussive sound. A great example of alternate-use percussion instruments (like spoons, triangle, cowbell, etc.). Nowadays, it's mostly used in Zydeco music, where the washboard has been modified to be worn as a vest. ZITHER-an instrument having from 30 to 40 strings over a shallow horizontal sounding box and played with plectrum and fingers.
My dad had one, and I used to pay it when I was a kid. Eventually sold it as an antique. [needed the cash at the time!]
