I agree that everyone has their own writing style & approach, but this a wonderful opportunity for folks to "dip their toes in the water" so to speak. With proper time management, discipline, passion & a little inspiration -- I think it's completely do-able :-)

I highly encourage people to at least give it a try, it's a great opportunity to finally start "that book" you've always wanted to write & what is the worst that can happen here? You've got yourself a working rough draft & a great start -- that's what can happen!

So I applaud you -- you have my total support & encouragement! In fact, you may have inspired me as well :-)

Totally understandable you've been crazy busy! I thought they had other writing marathons throughout the year during this past year for those who are unable to write in November. I vaguely remember getting emails about it!

I think you brought up a key point. NaNoWriMo is what many people need to get over that hurdle and "get going at it".

Countless people say "I'll write a book someday" or "I need to keep researching more". And they never get past that stage. They don't even realize they are stuck.

For many people, this is exactly what they need to shake off those cobwebs, put fingers to keyboard, and dive in. After thirty days, they've become even better writers, they've got their brain working more efficiently, and they have something to edit!

If one dreams of writing a book, it's a step in the right direction!

So many studies show that how we perceive things affect the end results. If one goes into NaNoWriMo saying "this can never work" or "the output will suck" - then that is exactly what will happen. If one goes into it thinking "my book will be awesome" and "I can do this!" then the chances of success are far, far better. Are they 100%? No, they never are. But they are certainly FAR better if one goes in with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

Hello Les and Debbie. I certainly agree in quality writing and to take as much time as needed to complete a book. This will be my first time entering NaNoWriMo and it will help me get my draft off the starting block.

Great post, Lisa. NaNoWriMo will be handy for me because I love to write but there are times where I have trouble trying to get my thoughts on paper. This will certainly help keep me on course especially with the deadline involved.

I have never heard of this program. I checked out your page. Are we supposed to post a novel on this website or simply update on progress? Aside from pushing writers along, what is the benefit to this program?

Hello Deb, I hope you're well. This is the first time I am doing this but the idea of NaNoWriMo is to update the word count as you progress and it doesn't look like you have to post the whole story but rather excerpts of the WIP.

If you hit the 50,000 word target within 30 days then you can upload the full story for verification of reaching the set goal.

Will you be giving it a go?

Getting closer to the start of the NaNoWriMo and I am really looking forward to this. Am finishing off my research so I am fully prepared to get straight into writing on November 1.
