So I've had this "thing" going with my hair for the last few years. I'm seasonal. For spring and summer, I wear my hair purple. For fall and winter, I'm bright red. There's just something about having unnaturally-colored hair that feels really right to me. I did a few years of having pink hair in my mid-20s, and that was fun but not as much as it goes now, 20 years later. Here's my current red look. (link goes to my tumblr blog) This photo was taken the last weekend of September when I was in Ashland, OR with a friend and we had a silly moment in a costume shop in between Romeo & Juliet and The Merry Wives of Windsor. There was no way I was passing up a chance to goof off with finger tentacles... Anyone else in the rainbow hair club? What color are you? And how does that work for you in your life?

Oh that photo is TOO COOL Rae I love it!! Because I donate my hair I'm nervous about doing any dye besides a really gentle brown one to color the greys on the very top of my head. I would love to do a purple like you have in your main photo, though .

It's true that dyed hair isn't that good for donating because it weakens it. That's part of why I keep my hair so short. I have to bleach it completely white to get the red and purple I like to wear.

Every time I go to the salon i want blue hair. Every time. It will be expensive and then fade out, so i am not sure it is a good use of cash for me. Even blue streaks would make me happy.

I never imagined coloring my hair anything else but my natural color. But now I'm thinking what a fabulous idea this would be! I just have to know that I won't be able to substitute teach or pursue my psyD. hehe! Such conservative folks... My husband might have a problem with a new hair color, too. He's conservative as well. But I'm thinking it might be time to redefine myself and I am ready for creativity, art, individuality, fun, whimsy and LIFE!!!! Hey Jilly, next time we get together, let's go get those blue streaks in your hair and I'll come up with some new color for myself! MY treat!!!

Sounds great Lori. You're on! Maybe for you, we can just do the tips. That always looks smart, and you can cut off the bottoms if you feel a need to later. What color do you like?

I'm not sure yet. I'll have to think about this. Fun.
Oh, but I cut my hair really short again so there' not a lot to color.
What about a wig? I might consider a fun wig!

Rae, I would be vibrant purple, but my school district would be totally upset. I will save that for my retirement look!

Jilly, I'm totally DIY on the coloring or I wouldn't be able to afford it myself. My mom and I re-bleach my roots about four or five times a year (yay, slow-growing hair!) and by buying supplies on my own, that's only about $30 a year for that part. I then buy the stain off eBay, saving at least 25% off those costs.
Lori, start with just some streaks or tips. I did, back in college. Wigs are good too. Watch for post-Halloween sales for the best colors and super-low prices.

Rae, you are lucky your mom is up for it! I could not keep up with this on my own. I do have happy, colorful wigs, but just for once I'd like my hair actually blue.
