Hello Francine,

I found your article very interesting, thanks!

Speaking of Radlers, when growing up in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe our first adult drink was a beer and lemonade mix which is called a Beer Shandy and can still be ordered today in pubs; though I would guess that some people haven't heard of them just as they haven't heard of a Campari or Pernod or Absinthe or Noilly Prat etc.

1500 beers to try? Needs a long bucket list and a looong sojourn in Germany. Time to see how this pig of mine is going to accommodate all the places I want to visit and do stuff - c'mon Princess, save more now!

Cheers

P S It's Shakespeare's birthday today being 23rd April, Happy Birthday William, Happy birthday to you. That and some beers and pretzels will go down well I say.

ahhh! Happy birthday, William!!! Thank you for all you gave us. A toast to Shakespeare...

Great article, Francine. I love reading you articles. Shakespeare would be proud of you for being such a great writer.

Gosh Lestie, first thanks so much for your comment but also just to reassure you.....'Shandy' is still going strong, so when that piggy bank is full and you take your rucksack and travel you will find it everywhere.

Along with your Campari with Soda, or orange, Pernod with ice and a little water, and Noilly Prat chilled, frapp, on ice or in a classic Dry Martini Cocktail....Lecker!

And of course Absinthe with lots of water, some sugar, too much ritual and even then Yuk

We weren't allowed Shandy as youngsters, not sure why because we did have a glass of wine with meals from an early age, but my favorite later was a Pussy Foot Shandy..........half homemade ginger beer, not ginger ale, and half beer.

Yum and Prost.

Prost and Zum Wohl to you too Phyllis, am happy you liked the article.

My favorite bit is the thought of those monks busily piously 'fasting', but getting through about 10 pints of beer a day..........Hmmm, no wonder it is still considered a food in Bavaria.

Now wouldn't that would be a good idea for our Back Porch Pow Wow, a Krug of ice cold beer with lots of Beer Garden goodies to chow down. But not ten pints perhaps, I would never find my way home.

That's it Francine, am off to try a pussy foot shandy - I really love ginger beer (of course home made better but) sounds really delish and cooling on a hot summer's day and all and all.

What do I see in our press that the German Taxi drivers are on strike in Berlin? Seems strange for this to happen, though obviously all agree with why they are striking - there were many in the photo.

Seems strange to imagine the German people taking such action - I don't know why I think so, industrial action is held all over the world in similar ways so do not know why I would think that the Germans wouldn't! Anyway

Send hellos and say thanks

Cheers

Wow that news reached South Africa Lestie.........the world is small indeed.

Did you see the great photo of them playing chess on the trunk of one of the taxis, on the Strasse des 17. Juni thoroughfare? The Brandenburg Gate was just to be seen in the distance and there was nothing else but parked taxis in between. It was supposed to be a slow convoy but it just sort of 'stopped'.

Yes a lot of drivers took part, and it is not something that happens very often at all. They were on strike over new taxes they are going to be charged when the Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens in June, they have been increased 300 per cent. That is quite a hike.

Enjoy your Pussy Foot Shandy.............here it is so cold and wet an Irish Coffee is more appropriate.

We can be as the Monks, Francine, at our Back Porch PowWow -- I think it is a great idea. Since the porch and cabin is magical, you would not have to go home till all is in balance again. You see, the cabin grows when each person steps into it, so there is always enough private room cubbies for each person to sleep in.

See that is what I like about Bellaonline, we can have four conversations at once and just keep on chatting!

No our press picture did not show the chess game but the Brandenburg gate was in the distance and there was a long lanes or two or three with the stationary cars. A German friend here mentioned that the unions were pretty well organised in Germany too. Do you think the taxi drivers will have any impact on the powers that be by their action?

Here in Johannesburg we have a huge outcry about the new toll roads that are due to come into operation on 30th April - but there is just so much resistence it wil be interesting to see what happens in our courts and in reality.

St Georges? He of the dragon fame? There is such a funny radio skit on this taking off the police in a way mixed in with a bit of James Bond or so who is tasked with a misdemeanour of the maiden eating dragon - he has to slay him and report back quickly. Its really funny, has anyone heard it? Ah well.

Say cheers and go in search of a back porch somewhere!!

Sorry to be so late getting back to you Lestie. To answer your question at last, would be surprised if Taxi drivers strike/go slow will affect any decisions which have already been made, although they do have a genuine reason to be more than a bit 'put out'.

While the residents of Berlin are not exactly thrilled to pieces with the situation either, it will make catching a plane more difficult in more ways than one. Am only an observer on this one, but from everything I've been told this is not a development that could be labelled 'an improvement'.

Love the sound of the St. George radio skit by the way, wonder if I can find it somewhere online. Is it recent?

Hi Francine,

Are you back home or still in France? Can guess only at how busy you have been so hope you are all set for some very good days ahead (weeks and months too!)

I will call my local radio station and ask for more details on the St Georges radio skit, they are sure to give me something more to work on, makes me smile just thinking about it, dahn darant dahn ... even the theme music make you smile.

Looks like the people do not rule any longer (if they ever really did!) as governments across the world carry on regardless, making decisions about all sorts of things and then ramming them down our throats and through parliament or whateer structure is the most expedient.

I am aiming to focus on my containers and carry on - I am a lucky old fish I say to have something so fulfilling to distract me from the news and politics these days.

Cheers to you Francine and all and all

Have to agree with your comment Lestie. Am not sure we have as much influence as we think we do as to what is carried out in our name, or for our 'benefit'.

And that goes for most things from taxes on taxi drivers and journeys to wars. It often seems we are simply presented with a 'fait accompli'.

Oh well it isn't even a long way from our beer topic, because I suppose it all increases beer, and wine, sales...........and increased activity with our container gardens'. cool
