A - Absinthe

Aka The Green Goddess - pretty strong stuff.

This post may reflect the historian in me, as Victorian Bohemians knocked it back and often wrote 'under the influence'.

"What is there in absinthe that makes it a separate cult? ... Even in ruin and in degradation it remains a thing
apart: its victims wear a ghastly aureole all their own, and in their peculiar hell yet gloat with a sinister perversion
of pride that they are not as other men." -- Aleister Crowley

Now whether this would be used nowadays in any cocktail I couldn't say.....Sandy? sick

Absinthe is becoming popular again, here in the US anyway. It was prohibited here for many years but it's been allowed back on the market in the last year or so. One of the most popular brands is called Lucid - perfect name, I think, for a beverage once known for causing hallucinations. I think the stuff sold these days doesn't have the same amount of wormwood as the earlier versions so it's not what Mr. Crowley enjoyed.

Vincent Van Gogh, one of my favorite people of all time, was closely associated with absinthe, too. Maybe that's where his inspiration for all those beautifully vibrant colors came from.
