As it has been linked to Ascension Day since the 1700s, which changes date every year depending on when Easter takes place and this year was on June 2nd, a Fathers Day in Germany is something of a moveable feast. But that is not the only way the celebration differs from other countries, to an outsider seeing the festivities for the first time it can be a bit of a surprise.
The tradition is not as closely followed as it used to be, but nevertheless instead of a celebration where children honour their father, a German Fathers Day is/was more a Mens Day, with many of them drinking until they have really had far more than enough, pulling a handcart filled with alcohol and food through the countryside for an alcoholic picnic, or sitting in a local bar enjoying themselves. Father's Day in Germany

What a very interesting article, Francine. I always love learning about the history and traditions of holidays. The German Father's Day tradition and origins seem to have drifted down through time to other cultures as well, as far as the male bonding aspect goes. I love the significance of the origin of the holiday.

Am with you on that Phyllis, love learning about history and traditions, about anything really. It might sound a bit strange but somehow the more one knows the hows and whys, the more interesting everything becomes, and a type of pattern takes shape. Badly explained I know, but perhaps you know what I mean.
Thanks very much for the feed back, and yes a German Fathers Day is really something else isnt it?

Smashing, I'd say. Male bonding... it is quite popular over here and they do not even have to wait for a holiday to celebrate. They also love to stand around a car with the hood open, a beer in each hand and trying to think of questions to ask about the engine while none of them are really doing anything for the car except looking at it. Funny!
