OK - sorry to sound like a smarty pants here Linda but hey ho!! - she had four children who were all there for her when she died, and yes, the brooch was the three feathers of the Prince of Wales.

In a final show of great humour, Liz directed that her hearse be 15 minutes late for her own funeral! Funnily enough when I heard this I thought it was very poignant - it made her seem so real, and ironically - so young and alive.

Smarty pants away all you like, I didn't know she had any children!

When is the funeral?

Eileen,
I understand the generational thing, but I still find it upsetting... and ironic, considering how well-informed the younger generation is supposed to be.
I mean, Marlene Dietrich, Clara Bow, and Benny Goodman were all well before my time, but I still know a great deal about them and I like them more than most entertainers who I grew up with... one has to keep an open mind to new things and constantly explore new things out of one's comfortable cocoon.
You know, I actually heard that many young people today simply refuse to watch any movie if it is in black and white... now that is not only ignorance, but willful ignorance!

Hi Alicia,

I have two teenage sons (whoops, elder boy is now 20!) - and I really had to sell Psycho to them, for them to watch it - some years back now, and my younger son was only about 13.

My parents had wanted myself and my brother and sister to watch it too, when I was a similar age - and they let us stay up late one night when it was on the Beeb - as I was the youngest it was a scary treat! I'll never forget it - I loved it and have adored Hitchcock ever since. Mind you back then (way back when!)our TV was black and white anyway!

Their main concern (the boys) was the black and white factor - but I was also curious to know how a suspense movie would make the (modern) grade with the young uns!

They absolutely loved it and my younger son is going on to do film studies, so he is becoming familiar with some classic films - he loves Charlie Chaplin too!!!

So sometimes a little persuasion can pay off, and eradicate some youthful prejudice.

My older boy has a massive classic film collection now - though he hasn't been able to get hold of Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, which he loves.

Oh - but my younger boy absolutely refuses to watch sub titled films - oh, unless it's anime, or in fact, anything Japanese!

That is so sweet of you Alicia - I hope it doesn't sound like I was showing off! They are lovely boys but of course all kids nowadays spend so long online. I know they have access to lots of information etc, and even social networking helps out when my younger son gets down, or feels lonely - but still, sometimes you just wish they'd get out more!

Oh and the watching TV with your parents thing - one of the kids is away at university and the other is always in his room, online - so it would have to be a pretty good prog to entice him downstairs with me and the TV!
