...oh just realised - you said Steve McQueen - another male heartthrob. It was Paul Newman, but what the heck - easy to confuse.

Thanks Eileen, I always muddle up those two. Paul Newman of course! And twice married to Richard Burton, okay thanks.

Hi Linda - I feel compelled to say at this point - you mix up Steve McQueen and Paul Newman? I know they're both iconic, gorgeous male sex symbols. But I just love - love love - Paul Newman, and funnily enough, particularly in this film.
I think McQueen had an edgy charisma and a sort of 'lived in' charm - in the same way that Daniel Craig does now. But Paul Newman was not only a superlative actor - but also beautiful to look at - rather like Liz Taylor, in fact.
My mum and I had an ongoing 'feud' after 'Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid' - who was better looking - Newman or Redford. For her it was Redford - for me...well obviously - Paul Newman. Gorgeous.

It upsets me that many younger people do not seem to know much about Elizabeth Taylor... there is an influential Chicago radio talk show host in his 30's who says he never saw any of her movies... he only knows her as a bloated old caricature of herself... That's like those ignoramuses who only know Elvis from his later years.
That kind of ignorance really gets me mad!
I'd like to tell those idiots, "C'mon people! Educate yourselves.. it's not that hard. Watch TCM, rent a DVD, or something! Once upon a time, there was genuine artistic talent in this country... yes, it was a long long time ago... before Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, and the other morons who pass for talent today."

Yeah. I was at school when I found out that Elizabeth Taylor had died. I spoke up right in the middle of class and said, "Elizabeth Taylor died this morning." All of the students immediately said, "Who?"
I've not seen many of her movies, but at least I know who she was and admired her as a great actress.

... geez! and I keep hearing that young people are smarter than previous generations. Sorry, but I see no evidence for that at all.... one would think with all of that constant physical attachment to numerous electronic devices, they would be better informed.

Oh I agree Paul Newman every time. I am useless with names Eileen! Yes, even Redford didn't do it like Newman.
I grew up watching Elizabeth Taylor on tv and in the cinema. I thought she was beautiful, and I have seen, well I guess I have, all of her films. I am sure the good old BBC will put on a few of her classics. Cleo to be sure!
Richard Burton asked some Duchess, forget her name! if she would mind if he had a copy of a brooch/pin that she wore made for Elizabeth, she agreed, but they felt it rude to do so. Richard bid for it when it came up for auction after the Duchess died and won it for her, so she had the real thing.

Re: Alicia's post - I suppose you can't really confuse being knowledgable with being bright - and not everyone cares about the same things, particularly if it is not in your cultural framework or about someone from a former generation.
But I agree with you Alicia - we should all educate our kids/young people about the iconic stars of our own youth. Let's face it - Liz, Elvis, The Beatles - you name it - should live on forever. Well, in a manner of speaking!!

Oh and Linda, do you mean he brooch that the Prince of Wales (and formerly Edward VIII) designed for his American bride, Wallis Simpson? Admittedly this was bought by Liz herself, not Burton - after the death of the Duchess of Windsor (Wallis Simpson's title after she married the Duke of Windsor, formerly the Prince of Wales). Taylor and Wallis Simpson were close friends and they both had a keen interest in flamboyant jewellery.
Perhaps you mean another jewel? It's all fascinating.

Eileen what would I do without you!
No that's the one, I am going by memory here so I thought Richard had bought it for her. The Prince of Wales Feathers??
I wonder what will happen to her jewel collection now? How many children did she have?
